Guest guest
I've been reading Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver and I'm amazed to see how close to SCD her family eats. They eat a few grains, but the bulk of their diet is home-grown fruits, vegetables, and locally-raised animal protein. The book also makes you aware of how many fossil fuels are burned transporting those Chilean blueberries in midwinter (guilty). This is a fascinating book for anyone. I learned all sorts of interesting facts about vegetables, such as the fact that asparagus grows into a four foot leafy tree at the end of the season, and that lettuces shoot up and become inedible when they're ready to go to seed. I've been reading a lot of these books lately because after going on the SCD I realize how much absolute *junk* the SAD diet contains.I also recommend Pollan's The Omnivore's Dilemma .and his follow-on book In Defense of Food (a little drier, but still interesting). Guest guest
I loved Animal, Vegetable, Miracle! Great book! I'm trying to start eating more locally, too. I'm especially particular about my meats. I recently found a great place to get beef and pork. The store owner raises all his own. Chicken has been the hardest to find. I still do buy some salmon too, but buy it sustainably fished. I love to garden but am just learning how, so I hope to grow most of my own veggies. Now, if I can just figure out all that I can tolerate in order to grow it . I thought B. Kingsolver's experiment was really interesting. I also loved Omnivore's Dilemma. I have In Defense of Food but haven't started it yet.
