Becky, since we are all as different in our chemical responses as we are in our fingerprints, it would be very hard to know which drug would cause which side effects for you and me both. Responses to chemicals are very indvidualized.

Express your concerns to the doc about topicals making it worse and perhaps you can have it compounded to try that.

GOod luck and keep us posted

need advice on anti-depressant and steroids

Hi, Ladies,

I am going back to the vulvar specialist tomorrow and I believe her next course of action is either a topical steroid or an anti-depressant. I'd love to hear the good, the bad, and the ugly about these medications. What is your advice?

My biggest concern about anything topical is making it worse or doing some kind of permanent damage.

With the anti-depressant, I am concerned about side effects, such as foggy headedness, dry mouth (I'm a singer), decreased sex drive (um, yeah, who needs that?), weight gain/hunger (I just lost all my baby weight!), bowel issues...there are just so many. Which one has the least effects but is still effective in pain relief?

Thanks for your quick response!

I am using amitriptyline and it does make your mouth dry and it does

contribute to weight gain. However, it has helped a lot with the

pain. I am on a strong dosage of 150mg. and you might be able to

keep it lower with fewer side effects.

I found that anything topical caused extreme burning and stopped

trying for a long time. Now I am using Estrace and it does irritate

but nothing like the burning I had before.

Good luck to you. It CAN get better!

HI Becky.... ;)

If it were 'me' I'd definitely try a steroid first.... it's topical and used correctly it can be a godsend.. Just don't over use it, that's all hon.

I have no idea why there is such a fear of those and me of all people who absolutely had horrible side effects from overuse but I know today when used correctly they truly can be a miracle, if the problem is with the skin itself, to help halt that itch, inflammation, pain etc... to break that pain cycle loop so the skin can renew itself. It's just being aware of how 'overuse' or abuse' can be detrimental.

Why take something orally such as an antidepressant that might trigger all those side effects you just mentioned first? Doesn't make any sense to me at least hon esp. if you've not even given those a try yet.

Good luck with what ever you try.

Dee~ ;)

Hey Becky,

The amitriptyline by itself made me very foggy. Desipramine made me alert during the day but I couldn't sleep at night.

But, I am successfully combining the two medications - amitriptyline and desipramine - and that seems to work great for me since one made me sleepy and the other an insomniac. I feel alert during the day and can sleep at night but don't oversleep so this works for me. I'm a singer, too... I honestly haven't noticed any dry mouth. I so far haven't put on weight, either. So, I'm hoping if I exercise that weight gain won't be a problem for me.
