Guest guest
As I have already posted, Ben is not gaining weight again, and as the past two months his appetite has seriously deteriorated. From a healthy eater who would never be full up he is now eating about a mouthful at each mealtime. He is to see our general pead in a week and I was wondering about the stimulant drugs that can be used. I have seen the above names banded about but I am unsure as to what they are. a (Ben, 29 mths)
Guest guest
Hi a, Pediasure is a high calorie formula/drink. It is about 30 calories per ounce (if I remember correctly). Periactin is a common antihistamine. The generic name is cyproheptadine. One of its side effects is it increases ones appetite. For some kids it has abig effect quickly and lasts along time. Many seem to adjust and it appears not be working when in fact it raises ones average level of appetite. In some kids it just does not work at all. Since most fall in the middle category it is important to measure calories before starting on the medication and then a couple of months later to see if it is making a difference. I hope this helps. Guest guest
Ken thanks for that info. Ben has been on a high calorie drink since he was 6 months old. It is called Infatrini and contains 100Kcal per 100ml. He will still drink that first thing in the morning and when he is tired during the day but it was never enough to fill him up. It doesn't seem to fill him up, rather acting as a drink in the same sense as juice/water. a (Ben 29mths)

Guest guest
a, I vaguely remember someone posting a while ago that periactin is not licensed for use as an appetite stimulant in the UK - I remember because we were planning a trip over there at the time and I remember thinking that if we ran out we would not be able to get a prescription while we were there! Anyway -its still worth checking as I could be wrong - but just thought I'd give you a heads up!
