I have to have my mammogram redone. Unfortunately, my health insurance

stopped when my job ended at the end of March. I still do not have any

COBRA information so I presently have no insurance. My doctor is going

nuts because I have not had the re-test. Does anyone know of any

organization that might pay for it since I am unemployed and have no insurance?

When I went on COBRA, the coverage was retroactive to the last day of my

employed coverage...I think there is a regulated time frame for the COBRA

information to be provided. I would hound the company representatives, or

contact the insurance company and ask how to get the information.

COBRA is a bit expensive, but having the continous coverage will help avoid an

exclusion for pre-existing conditions. Having the documentation of continous

coverage meant my new employer's coverage did not leave me with a pre-existing

issue on my fibroids.

Also, you might check and see if there is a community health council in your

area. There are programs to provide free/low cost mammos to women. Maybe there

is one in your area that you would qualify for...I know there is (or at least

was a year ago) a mammogram voucher program here, locally.

It is the responsibility of the company you worked for to provide you

with the COBRA information. If they have not provided it, your closest

Department of Labor Benefits Assistance unit may be able to help. While

they don't have enforcement power, they can often light a fire under the

butt of whoever was supposed to give you the COBRA material. They can

also help you better understand your rights. They basically are able to

work with anyone whose benefits are covered by ERISA. This legislation

covers the majority of employees in the US, but generally not state and

local government employees.

Good luck!
