Guest guest
The elemental diet is basically nutrition that is absorbed by the body well without going through the digestive tract entirely, thus giving it a rest. Jini Patel discusses this on her website and has a product called Absorb Plus that works like this. I ordered some before starting SCD. It has tons of good nutrition in it....but also has maltodextrin as the sugar source and that is SCD illegal. I was actually disappointed to see this. Most nutrition drinks are SCD illegal. It would be great to see a nutrition drink out there that is SCD compatible. PJ > > Does anyone know anything about combining the SCD diet with Elemental Diets? TPN (Total Parenteral Nutrition) is where a person is fed intravenously, which completely bypasses the digestive tract. There are a couple of benefits to this:1) Since the digestive tract is completely bypassed, it gets a chance to rest and heal. Sort of like not walking on a sprained ankle until it heals.2) If a person is sick enough, they can reach the point where the digestive tract isn't functioning well enough to supply nutrients to the body. TPN supplies predigested nutrients directly, so a person should be able to gain weight even with a badly damaged digestive tract. There are a couple of problems too:1) There is a risk of infection at the site where the tube is inserted into a vein.2) The patient is depending on only the TPN formula for all nutrition. Getting every possible nutrient in the correct proportions is probably not possible. But to the extent that they come close, TPN can be a big benefit ___________________________________________________Loving Care Grammy Gay Surgery '75, CD '94,SCD '97, No meds. Guest guest
You are probably correct- completely avoiding the gut requires TPN, but then that would mean having intravenous fluids for a long time. There are oral feedings for infants with bowel issues that require very little digestion- all the nutrients are already broken down. I thought an elemental diet referred to this type of feeding. I have not looked at the actual study on elemental diet to know what they used- but the main idea is to rest the bowel. I'm not sure for how long they used this, but to do it all through an IV would be difficult. Just my guess... PJ > > > > Does anyone know anything about combining the SCD diet with Elemental Diets? Guest guest
Hi My son is drinking elemental formula only since last year. Meaning is his sole source of nutrition. He is 4 and it's bit hard now but at the beginning he loved it because his tummy didn't hurt when he was drinking it. It really gave him a respite from pain and put a lot of weight in few months. When we start with foods again , I want to try the SDC diet and see if it helps to get rid of the remaining bugs in his body. However, you're right some elemental formulas have maltodextrin and corn syrup...it is very refined but still I believe corn and other sugars are forbidden in the diet. I'm sure some people can be able to tolerate foods and drink this formula, it can very healing and has lots of nutritients that the body can absorb easily and without trigering allergies because is protein free. The following companies make elemental formula Elecare http://elecare.com/ Nutricia http://www.shsna.com/pages/pediatric_eo28.htm They have several formulas and some people do better with one or more ... like some people doesn't tolerate splash that well or the tropical Jr. They have some formulas without the sugar " unflavored " but they taste horrible. My son drinks Splash E028 orange flavor and the taste is not bad...however, I wish they wouldn't be so corn based. Hope this helps, Patty > > > > Does anyone know anything about combining the SCD diet with Elemental Diets?
