Hi all- I received this in response to my query about why Mutaflor is not available in the US.

Dear Terry,

Thank you for your interest in our ethical probiotic drug Mutaflor.

Mutaflor is registered as a drug according to the latest EU standards

in various European countries.

Mutaflor contains the probiotic E. coli strain Nissle 1917 and is

used as a remedy for gastrointestinal diseases such as inflammatory

bowel disease (e.g. remission maintenance of ulcerative colitis)

and symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome such as diarrhea,

constipation, or bloating.

Unfortunately, it is not registered in the United States so far as it is

commercially available in Europe, e.g. in Germany and

Austria, only. It may be ordered, however, from any

internationally operating pharmacy as there is one, e.g.,

As to our knowledge, this pharmacy has frequently delivered

the drug to the US which has not taken very long, so no

problems may be expected with regard to the break in

refrigerated storage. Also, we have not heard from any

problems with customs.

information on Mutaflor, please don't hesitate to ask again.

Dear Maya,

Thank you for the information. I have emailed them already and gotten a response. The cost is extremely high, so I will have to reconsider.

Do you know if there are any plans for Mutaflor to come to the US?

Also, do you know why it is not here in the US and what normal citizens could do to facilitate it's sale in the US?
