Guest guest
Hi there I am booking in for my lumpectomy next Friday and as its first thing in the morning they want me in the night before but then will be let home Friday afternoon. At first they said that I would not have to stay but then decided as I was on the list for first thing on Friday it would be better if I stayed the night before so will be going in sometime after teatime. I think that the radiation treatment is usually shortly after the wound has healed and then can last for anything from 4 to 6 weeks Terry Hi, people--Can any one tell me if lumpectomy is done on out-patient basis--or doyou stay overnight--what can I expect before/during/after surgery? How long do you have to wait until radiation--I am consideringMammoSite as I seem to be a good candidate for that--anyone out therehave it? Also, does radiation keep you from having other surgery? Iwas hoping to get my knee replaced--but now with the cancer treatment It is postponed.Thank you girls for being here for me--I need help.Blessings,Bobbi

Guest guest
Hi Bobby, Welcome, I had a lumpectomy on April 10, 2006 with Sentinnel Node. They had me as a overnight statis depending on the nodes. If nodes were clear I would have gone home that afternoon, but 2 of the nodes showed positive. So I was in for the night. Before surgery, I had to go to Radiology for a shot for the sentinnel node proceeder. Had a IV. And waited for them to come and get me for surgery. We didn't get into the operating for for more the a minute and out I was put. Don't remember anything, until after I was taken to recovery and I really don't remember much of that. Afterwards I awoke in my room and seeing my hubby and brother in law. Nurse came in and did a check on my drain for the nodes and pain medicine was given and I got to eat and watch TV. They administered pain medicine about every 2 hours if I needed it. Next day, about 12 pm I went home. The lumpectomy, was very easy to deal with for me, healed very quickly, a little bruising and swelling, which I still have some of the swelling, but no pain. The node surgery was the one that gave me a little trouble. But nothing rest and taking it easy didn't fix. That night the hospital gave good pain meds and I was able to sleep peacefully, as for home, it took a matter of finding a comfortable place to lay and sit and sleep came easy. Rest and Relax was the ticket for me. Will pray for a good outcome on your surgery. Guest guest
Bobbi, I forgot, that my treatment starts the 24th of this month, I get my port in on the 22nd. Both my doctors, told me that even if the nodes were clear, Radiation would not have started until at least a month after the surgery so that I would be good and healed. But in my case, I will start with chemo first. Guest guest
-Hi Bobbi, I had limpectomy Sept 2004. day surgery. Had to wear a sports bra for a few days, put ice on breast and under arm (sentinel node surgery done at the same time) my underarm hurt more than the breast. Medication helps. Just need to take it easy even if you feel great. I did a little too much and ended up with a hematoma under my arm which eventually went away. Good luck. You will do great. Guest guest
Bobbi - I can only tell you that my lumpectomy was out-patient. They took the lump and a few lymph nodes...however, my pathology came back with bad news and I had to move forward with a mastectomy. The radiation was cancelled and I went straight to chemo. The pain from the lumpectomy wasn't too bad. Was only on pain meds for 3 days. Was able to take a shower after 24 hours. Wish I could be of further help. Guest guest
Jolene Sorry to hear about having to join this group. However, welcome to the group. I was reading your email about the lumpectomy and was very surprised they put you under so quick. I had a nurse interview me and tell me what was going to happen and marked my right breast. And then the anesthesiologist came in and asked questions. And when they were ready for me they went through a procedure where each new nurse I met along the way asked me what side I was having surgery on........it was fascinating and wonderful to know that they took these precautions. And after I was in OR they did try to put me out right away. But I have hard veins to find so he started on my hand. That vein collapsed real fast and then he moved on to my wrist where the veins stand out great........and then I was waking up. This was at a Surgery Center and I went home the same day. Didn't have any major problems with pain, ice packs helped......and they got two lumps out with clear margins, and they took the sentinel node which tested clear. Hang in there Janet > > Hi Bobby, > > Welcome, I had a lumpectomy on April 10, 2006 with Sentinnel Node. They had me as a overnight statis depending on the nodes. Guest guest
Thank you, Janet for the Welcome. Things did happen so very fast, My surgeon did however, explain what would be happening prior to having the surgery. But alias nothing once I got to the hospital. My hubby, said that they kept him and my brother in law very informed though. I did have to apply ice for awhile, but most of the pain, I think was due to a hematoma (spelled very wrong I'm sure, LOL) but once heat was applied that soon to went away. I saw my onc, on the 10th and he upgraded my stats to grade 3, stage III after all the test results came in. So on the 22nd port will be put in and I'll have my first chemo the 24th. I'll know exactly what my chemo will involve on the 18th as I go to a chemo class and they will advise me of all that will be involved to what I have choose. Diggy me forgot to write it all down, and with the technical terms and names of the drugs I just can't remember them....I've heard of chemo brain, and I think I've created my own of diggy brain..LOL I'm glad for the port as at this time the only arm they can use has 1 good vein, and they are babying that right now, it will have to be the hand next or wrist like you. I feel I've done well to this point, but this waiting it nerve racking. Is my impatience showing...I'm for sure hanging in there and will hang as long as it takes..LOL Again Thank you for your welcome. Guest guest
Hi Bobbi I only know that my eye surgeon is going to wait until I am done with chemo and radiation before taking out the one cataract that I have left. I can only see with one eye, but I have 20/20 visiion in the other eye. My oncologist insisted on at least three months of chemo before my radiation. And my Radiology dr said I would have been eligible for the one week radiation but.......my cancer is a very aggressive type so I have to have 33 days of rads. Just my experience and you know that we all have differences which make our bc unique, just like everyone else. Good luck! Janet
