Guest guest
I was wondering if there is a need for probiotics if you are eating the SCD yogurt? It seems like the amount of bacteria in a probiotic capsule is minimal compared to the yogurt. Also, I am curious about the symptoms of the " die off " reaction in IBD. I know it is discussed on the autism boards, but I am also curious about what those with IBD have experienced. Thanks, PJ

Guest guest
You don't need to take an acidophilus supplement if you are also eating the 24-hour fermented yogurt that includes acidophilus. It is important to get some legal probiotics on a regular basis, but how much and how often and what type of probiotic is an individual decision based on your symptoms and how your body handles things. Some of us can't tolerate dairy or nut milk or other forms of lactic-fermented foods, so we use a legal acidophilus or s. boulardii supplement instead. Not everyone takes the supplement every day, just as not everyone eats yogurt every day. Some people prefer to take large doses of probiotics, others take a minimal amount. All depends on our bodies and where we are in our healing journey or whether we are taking antibiotics, and so on. As to die-off, I can't speak to the exact affects with an IBD as my digestive disorders are functional, but from my research and belonging to SCD support groups (I see a lot of emails!) die-off symptoms are essentially the same regardless of the disorder or condition. Die-off is generally short-lived (about 24 to 48 hours), and consists of immune system responses to the toxin overload -- muscle aches, headaches, possible respiratory congestion, occasional nausea -- in general, flu-like symptoms. Die-off can trigger IBD symptom flares, though -- or at least so it seems to me from peoples' emails. Kim M.
