Guest guest
Hello, Thank you everyone for the warm welcome. I have not been diagnosed with breast cancer. I did have a scare with cysts, and fibrocystic breasts run in my family. So far everyone is ok. What I have noticed in reading medical histories of breast cancer patients for my job is how often there is no history of breast cancer in the family when a woman gets diagnosed with it. I have been diagnosed with fibrocystic breast since age 24…I’m now 48, was 47 when diagnosed with BC. The only cancer in my family is smoking related. I had a grandfather who died of lung cancer and my mother had cancer of her larynx. Re: Rhonda Karl Introduction/Response Hello, Thank you everyone for the warm welcome. Guest guest
Hi Rhonda, We never had any history of cancer in the family. My Father developed cancer of the esophagus and passed away 15 years ago. I acquired my breast cancer just over a year ago followed by a malignant melanoma on my leg last May. Both cancers reared their ugly heads after several years of severe stress... One stress was a lawsuit from my next door neighbor for feeding the birds and squirrels in my backyard (she won saying I was a nuisance) the other stress was my senior citizen Mom pushing to move in with me (which she did). This happened 1 to 2 years before my first cancer diagnosis. So, in my opinion, I belive stress play's a huge role in developing cancer. I commend you for choosing to work in oncology, I never felt I could handle that kind of stress. I chose to assist in surgery for 20 years at Swedish Hospital in Washington State. I must admit that I miss it, but am no longer well enough to continue to work... Take Care, Re: Rhonda Karl Introduction/Response Hello, Thank you everyone for the warm welcome. Guest guest
, Wow, you are putting my pathetic problems into perspective. You certainly need to keep your follow-up appointments. You are absolutely right about the stress being a contributor or potentiator of cancer. I have a friend from Bosnia. She is a plastic surgeon. She is very interested in the effects of stress creating cancer. A few years after the war in Bosnia, young people, and all people started coming down with all kinds of weird cancers. She firmly believes in a connection between stress and cancer. We can only imagine what it would be like to go through the stress of a war in your backyard. She lived in between the two opposing areas that were fighting. Her bombed out house was shown on CNN. That has got me thinking about this whole no family history of breast cancer issue. I am pretty quick to be suspicious of the hormones in the meat, but maybe it has to do with the increased stress too. Food for thought. I have also heard of a theory about what is going on when the breasts are developing in puberty contributing to cancer later on. That is so horrible about the lawsuit about the birds and the squirrels. I feed the birds too. If you grow a flowering tree will she complain about the bees? If you had the room you could plant the birdseed. The plants that grow have birdseed that the birds eat too. Half my suburban backyard is made into " square foot gardening. " We like to grow some herbs and veggies. We feed the birds because they also eat the bugs off our produce. Stress is certainly killing so many of us, if it's not cardiovascular wise, it is the emotional eating that makes us get too overweight and cause health problems, or it's the cancers. Going to remember to use that word NO more and rest. Rhonda wrote: Hi Rhonda, We never had any history of cancer in the family. Guest guest
Hi Rhonda – Yes, I have one child, a daughter. She is 27. She just had a breast reduction as she has been suffering from back and neck pain for about 5 years – she was a 40 DD on a rather small frame. Although I encouraged her to do self-exams, she wasn’t doing them, but will now. She doesn’t have fibrocystic breasts like me, but I don’t know if that is an indicator or not. There’s someone of this list that has several daughters and, if I’m remembering right, feels some guilt that she may have handed this disease down to them. I have that fear too, but at least with this new history she can be vigilant. Re: Rhonda Karl Introduction/Response Hello, Thank you everyone for the warm welcome.
