saltpeter legal or illegal?

Hi,

I am going to attempt to make corned beef this weekend. I tried in vain to find

out if corned beef from the store is legal, I could not find an answer then I

found a recipe of how to make corned beef and it sounds legal. Then searching

through the internet I found that saltpeter just 1/4 tsp. makes it the pink

color we are use to seeing and wonder if its legal or not.
