Guest guest
Gretchen, I hadn't realized that. Are there any OTC decongestants that are ok for diabetics? I need to take something at night or I have problems with congestion which is not too good with the cpap. Les Re: Vicki and CPAP again > I go with two generic sudafed nightly. Check the ingredients of sudafed. It contains pseudoephedrine, which is a decongestant that makes BGs go up. Gretchen
Guest guest
> I hadn't realized that. Are there any OTC decongestants that are ok for > diabetics? Don't really know, but I think the nasal sprays have less effect than the systemic. If you can get a prescription, the artificial steroid nasal sprays like Flonase work the best. The other nasal sprays like Afrin cause " rebound " stuffiness. That is, they work great for about 24 hours and then you're even more congested than you were before. If you've used those, try stopping them for a while to see if the congestion gets better. Of course another option would be to test BGs with and without the decongestants you're using to see what effect they have on you. Guest guest
I already take Flonase and Iproproprium Bromide, I forget the name brand of that one, as well as Zyrtec, but I still need something else at bedtime to keep my nose clear or the cpap doesn't work that well, which is why I take generic Sudafed, at times. I tend to have very bad allergies. I also take Advair inhaler for the asthma. Les -----Original Message----- > Are there any OTC decongestants that are ok for diabetics? Guest guest
Do some research at the ADA site, and look in books for ideas. I can only give you our experience. My husband is a type II diabetic too. Unchecked his BG numbers are well over 300. But he is now consistently running at about 104 to 109. He does eat eggs a few times a week. He's very careful about his diet though, not obsessing on it, but is careful. He eats right, takes his metformin, and EXERCISES! After watching my husband and a couple of friends of ours, I'm convinced that exercise is not emphasized as much as it should be. Consistent, daily exercise is my husband's best friend in his fight against diabetes. Guest guest
Well...I'm type 1 but I eat 2 eggs every other day. I also take cholesterol lowering med but before starting that, I eschewed eggs for 2 years in an effort to control my (familial) high cholesterol with diet but it didn't work. So I figured I might as well take the pills and enjoy my eggs. This worked better for me than Flonase, Beconase, or Vancenase. I am also taking Claritin in the morning, and Singulair and diphenhydramine HCl at night. I can also recommend Nasalcrom, which is now available OTC. And sometimes, I will use Zicam (nasal gel, or the new nasal swabs) if I'm really sniffly. One thing that definitely helped was switching my Nasonex from mornings to a few minutes before bed, or taking half the dose in the morning and half before bed. I have had alot of congestion problems, but have not needed Afrin for half a year. I save it for when I have a really bad cold/sinus infection that is interfering with my breathing. -- el (andreafrankel at sbcglobal dot net) " wake now! Guest guest
So not eating whole eggs did not help your cholesterol at all? I am not supposed to eat them either and take meds for cholesterol. I am glad you shared that. Guest guest
No, it didn't, not one bit. And I was sooooo good, too! Nary an egg passed my lips for nearly 2 years. Or butter. Actually, my cholesterol stayed pretty high on just lipitor (and I was on the highest dose, 80 mg) It.wasn't until the doc added Zetia that I got Really Good numbers. Guest guest
I started using saline nasal spray which has helped a lot, plus Rhino-Cort [Rx] - just found out via CT-scan I have a cyst in my left sinus. Guest guest
I was only taking 10mg of Lipitor and now on 20mg. But eggs was one of my few good eating habits. I did get into eating Egg Beaters with nuts on top in the microwave. But I do miss some of the yokes so I just may change my thinking on that. And I will ask about Zetia when I see my doctor next time. Thanks. ml whimsy2 wrote: > > No, it didn't, not one bit. And I was sooooo good, too! Nary an egg > passed my lips for nearly 2 years. Guest guest
ML: I use eggbeaters but not because of the cholesterol but because I can have MORE for less calories! Why don't you just mix 1 whole egg into the 2 or 4 eggbeater mix. That way you get the best of both worlds. cappie Greater Boston Area T-2 10/02 1/05 A1c: 5.4 = 115 mean glu 50-100 carb diet, walking, Metformin ALA/EPO, Coq10, B12, ALC, Vit C Cal/mag, low dose Biotin, full spectrum E, Chromium P, Policosanol, fish oil cap, fresh flax seed, multi vitamin, Lovastatin 20 mg, Enalapril 10 mg 3/05:140 lbs (highest weight 309), 5' tall /age 67, cappie@... After 6 months of trying it the " eat this, don't eat that " way, there was absolutely no difference in my total cholesterol or my LDL. Total stayed at 210- 215 and LDL stayed at 133-136. The thing that did happen was my HDL went from 60 to 51, which was not an improvement! Since then (August), I've put eggs back into my life, and am working on other things for the HDL including more red wine. Eggs are a cheap, easy source of protein, and I'm not giving them up.
