Hi group,

It's true that minocycline is best taken on an empty stomach and especially

needs to be taken at least two hours or more away from calcium supplements

or foods.

However, some people find that they can't tolerate minocycline on an empty

stomach. As one of this group said a few years back " the minocycline

absorption is zero if you vomit it all back up again " . So if you can

tolerate it on an empty stomach, fine. If not, then take with a small amount

of food which doesn't contain calcium.

My pharmacist told me to take it on an empty stomach or with a few crackers.

Nothing with calcium as Minocin binds with calcium and will not enter the

bloodstream. I usually take it on an empty stomach, but with some people who

have become ultra sensitive to meds after being on many mainline meds for

years, a cracker or piece of toast might help an extra sensitive stomach. At

least until you are able to come off all other meds and your stomach has time

to repair itself. Martha

I also get an upset stomach when taking Mino, but I

know that it's supposed to be taken on an empty

stomach. I have found that taking it before bedtime

helps. That way I have aready fallen asleep by the

time I would normally be feeling nauseous and the

discomfort isn't enough to wake me.

If I'm not mistaken there's some risk to this because of the reflux that can

occur with lying down after taking it.

If you are taking minocycline at bedtime, you should do so with a full glass

of water 30 minutes before going to bed.

Yes. I do that. I have also read about the reflux. I

always drink a full glass of water, unfortunately I

have to get up in the middle of the night to relieve

myself. So far it works for me. It may not be a good

idea but I have had no problems.

Dear Group,

The following is a repost of one of my earlier emails dated 4/23/2003

" Most references state that while tetracycline has to be taken on an empty

stomach, minocycline and doxycycline can be taken with food. Food may

slightly decrease the effectiveness of these drugs, but it makes them

easier on the stomach.

http://www.dermnetnz.org/index.html

" Tetracycline should be taken with a glass of water on an empty stomach,

half an hour before, or two hours after meals. This is because food

prevents absorption of tetracycline into the bloodstream. Some people find

this inconvenient, and others get indigestion unless it is taken with food.

Minocycline and doxycycline are not affected by food and can be taken at

mealtime. "

http://www.medicomm.net/Consumer%20Site/dh/dh_m33.htm

" Minocycline should be taken on an empty stomach, one hour before or two

hours after meals... Take minocycline at least one hour before or two hours

after consuming dairy products such as milk and cheese. "

http://www.tldp.com/issue/178/Rheumatoid%20Arthritis%20Drug.html

" Can other antibiotics be substituted for Minocin? Yes. Tetracycline and

doxycycline are frequently substituted for Minocin and both have proven to

be effective. Tetracycline is the least expensive, costing approximately 8

cents a tablet. Tetracycline is taken usually twice a day, three days a

week (M-W-F). It is more apt to react to foods and must be taken on an

empty stomach... Food can impair the absorption of some antibiotics (not as

true of doxycycline or minocycline) so they are to be taken on an empty

stomach. "

" Minocycline. Possible side effects... Cramps or burning of the stomach;

diarrhea; dizziness, lightheadedness or unsteadiness. "

" Tetracycline should be taken on an empty stomach. Doxycycline and

minocycline can be taken with food. "

" Drink a full glass of water with each dose of tetracycline. Take

tetracycline on an empty stomach, 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals or

snacks. Do not take tetracycline with food, especially dairy products such

as milk and cheese. Take tetracycline with crackers or a snack (no dairy

products) only if you experience an upset stomach. "

" The tetracycline antibiotics are the most effective ones for swelling or

spots [related to acne & rosacea]. These drugs must be taken on an empty

stomach, an hour before eating anything. Minocycline is not affected by

food in the stomach and, if prescribed for you, does not have to be taken

on an empty stomach. "

er.html

Tetracyclines should taken on an empty stomach, 1-2 hours after the most

recent meal or snack. In particular, milk or other dairy products should

not be consumed within 1-2 hours of taking a tetracycline. However,

tetracyclines should be taken with a large glass of water to help prevent

irritation of the stomach. (Food may be taken together with doxycycline and

minocycline.) "

Sincerely, Harald
