Guest guest
I was talking about acidophilus and the likes. Acidophilus is just one enzyme that the gut needs to digest food properly. In actuality, there are 200 different enzymes in the gut that can get messed up with antibiotics. The probiotic that I take has 10 of the most important ones in it. Guest guest
Probiotics are the healthy bacteria that live in our intestine. Guest guest
You need to find a commercial yogurt without bifidus to use as a yogurt starter. Or use a yogurt starter from the few sources that offer one with just the three strains of probiotics (that don't include bifidus). Elaine allowed a commercial yogurt as a starter, but it has to be one that only has the three strains. She also allowed a yogurt starter that only has the three strains. Two of the strains are required to make yogurt, and Acidophilus is usually added. Kim M. since she recommends making yogurt w/ comercial yogo starter, wouldn't the bifidus in it multiply and be in our home made yogurt anyways? Guest guest
This is too expensive, but according to what I read, it is different than acidophilus and s. boulardii...... because it is a non-pathogenic E. coli, it is stronger/more effective than other probiotics,it actually has several clinical trials in respected journals that show it maintains remission in UC and other IBD's, comparable to mesalamine but obviously without the side effects. It is available in Canada as a prescription for UC. It is not an over the counter probiotic in any country. I am intrigued, but the cost is too prohibitive. If there's a cheaper way, I'll post, too. Guest guest
Debbie, You bring up a good point. Mutaflor is not for treatment of active, moderate disease ( though it may help achieve remission) It is for remission maintenance. If you read some of the other studies it shows it is more effective in maintaining remission on patients who have been in remission a longer time than those in new remission. The point, I think, is that if you are in remission or symptom free and on meds, this might be a way to remove those meds from your regimen. In addition, if you are in a remission and med free, this may reduce flares, and keep you med free longer. 4.8 grams of mesalamine is for aggressive treatment of active, moderate disease. I, myself, had very mild presentation of UC, though I had ulceration throughout the colon, and was prescribed 2.4 grams of Lialda. My GI said many of his patients take 1.2 gms per day when feeling better, or skip a day, or take a month off and go back on a month. I recently tried a 'drug holiday' and have not taken any for one week with no symptoms. Will this last? I have no idea. But I would have liked to have been able to try this Mutaflor to see how long I could go. I'm not very good at taking pills--meds, vitamins and supplements. But I know I have to start trying better. Even though I do eat the SCD yogurt, I make look into adding probiotic supplements. As Marilyn said, the Mutaflor is so attractive because it's been studied. Mutaflor obviously does not have the side effects of mesalamine, and yes, if it became available in the US and was cheaper, it would be a lovely safe alternative to mesalamine. Terry Re: Probiotics I looked at the ulcerative colitis study comparing Mutaflor favorably with mesalazine. It used a very low dose (maybe sub-therapeutic?) of mesalazine, 500 mg 3 times a day = 1500 mg. I've always been told to take at least 2400 mg, preferably 3600 mg, and some patients take 4800 mg. So I wonder how it might compare with using a more standard dose of mesalamine. Or would taking more Mutaflor be a safe and effective option? If if becomes available by prescription in the US, the cost may well be less than mesalamine.http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15479682?ordinalpos=1 & itool=EntrezSystem2.PEntrez.Pubmed.Pubmed_ResultsPanel.Pubmed_DiscoveryPanel.Pubmed_Discovery_RA & linkpos=1 & log$=relatedarticles & logdbfrom=pubmedDebbie T -- UC 29 yrs, SCD 10/06, Lialda (delyed release mesalamine)> > > I found this--wicked expensive, but I think it is American--there is an 888 number to call if a problem. Guest guest
How your body tolerates probiotics depends on several factors, and you may have to adjust things as you work through healing. Most people have no problems tolerating probiotics in any form, others have to experiment a bit to find what works for them. Probiotics are essential to our healing, but sometimes our bodies won't tolerate them initially. I had problems tolerating dripped yogurt and/or a legal acidophilus supplement for the first 4 to 6 months on SCD. I was getting strong immune responses within 20 minutes of swallowing either yogurt or the acidophilus -- hives and respiratory distress. Of course at the time I was also dealing with a systemic candida overgrowth, and my gut ecology was really disturbed and my immune system hypersensitive. Through some testing I made sure it was either the yogurt or the acidophilus supplement I was reacting to, not something else. I don't know if this is common, but when my immune system reacts, my digestive system also reacts. This may be due to having Sphincter of Oddi dysfunction, so my liver and upper GI are hypersensitive. Then, because I have a faulty nervous system, I also have poor neuromuscular responses for a few days following an immune system reaction and/or digestive system reaction.... All connected -- the brain/blood/gut... I couldn't handle Lucy's Lyosan acidophilus, by the way, and switched first to Custom Probiotics' acidophilus, then tried Kirkman Lab's acidophilus. Lyosan is dairy-based, and my stomach and upper GI couldn't tolerate it. I also had to stop eating yogurt after a year (casein sensitivity), so I regularly take a legal acidophilus supplement instead (Kirkman Labs). Can't eat bananas either, then or now. I think it's all a matter of trying different foods and supplements, paying attention to our body's signals, then adjusting to things. I've found that after year 3 on SCD my body is a whole lot more tolerant of foods than it used to be, as long as I stay within the range of what my upper GI disorders require. Kim M. SCD 5 years Sphincter of Oddi dysfunction 5+ years neurological deterioration 3 years >>>>>>>>>>> Kim, I wasn't aware that one could have a tolerance problem with probiotics. I thought you could take them at any time, on or off the diet. I'm not on the diet (yet) but just started Lucy's probiotic, and have noticed a change, for worse, in stool, but thought it was due to adding bananas to my breakfast. Must one be on the diet to benefit from probiotics?thanks, tomibs 2 yrs
Guest guest
I believe the Kirkman Labs legal L. Acidophilus is dairy free. I am not sure what the growing medium consists of, never asked. But the supplement ingredients listing has nothing but L. Acidophilus and cellulose for the capsule (which you can empty and avoid the cellulose if you prefer). I have to be dairy-free as well, and I don't react to Kirkman Labs L. Acidophilus or the Custom Probiotics L. Acidophilus. Haven't tried GiProHealth. Couldn't tolerate the Lyosan legal acidophilus, but it does include dairy. Kim M. >>>>>>>>> Thanks Kim! The kirkman on is dairy free isn't it? I need to make sure the one I get is DF.Shonda
