Guest guest
1. Does anyone remember the month of all the 504 posts so that I can go back and read them????? 2. Some general questions for our meeting on Wednesday. How is your child " labeled " ?? Are they labled as a chiold with a chornic health impairment /dwarfism/RSS first and the other areas (speech, OT, PT) as secondary? What is important to get in the IEP re this. Connor only " qualified " on the PT and speech, but I think they are missing the boat on the RSS/medical potential. Here I am a teacher who sits in on all of these meetings, but when you wear the other hat, boy you become ignorant. Is your child 504 or IDEA or BOTH? If I live in one state (NY) and Connor qualifies, and my insurance is in another state(CT) can I use my own money/insurance to place him in a private program, or one covered by my own insurance in CT??? Since he is in CT with me during the school day (at babysitter), it would be impossible for him to get some services at home---my preference is to address his speech first which is the most needy area, at home with a ST, and to pay to put him in the PRE-K in my own school in CT, which I will pay for, for the OT, PT, etc. Seems like the NY school shoudl love this as it woudl save them big bucks?!?!?!??!?!? Guest guest
Kim, I don't remember when all of the posts were about the 504. Sorry. I can, however, tell you about how we had Max evaluated and what he fit under. At the time, there were only a few choices. There was no otherwise health impaired label. Max was listed under Perceptually Impaired. He has an IEP and everything. I guess that is what you are referring to as IDEA. Now Max is classified as Communication Handicapped. He scores very low in areas of speech and auditory processing - bigger issues than his RSS medical needs. He still has an IEP and I have made sure that his extra snacks, etc. are included in it. This point is kind of moot, however, because he is at the school where I teach and it is a school for kids with learning difficulties. Everyone, or almost everyone, has an IEP and we tend to structure our classes so that everyone's needs are met. Now, for the therapies...if you are planning on having your own insurance company cover the expenses of the therapies, then it does not matter what state you are in. My husband's insurance is out of MI because that is where his company is based. They cover everything for us here in NJ. It does not matter where our doctors are, either. The part about schooling is moot, too, if you are going to pay for it. According to law, the district in which your child is going to school is the district that is responsible for providing the needed services. That may include speech, PT, etc. if they think it is necessary. All you have to do is have your school notify the local school district or the county division of special ed, depending on which one they use, and they will take care of the evals, etc. I hope I have helped somewhat. If you have more questions, just let me know. Jodi >From: kimchir@... >Reply-To: RSS-Support >To: RSS-Support >Subject: 504 help---questions--Joid???
