Guest guest
I'm not sure if it is RSS specific. I think it is an age thing from what I am seeing with Colby, and his peers. School is boring when you look at the environment kids are used to these days with the proliferation of technology. I have a hard time understanding how it is that the school systems are still using the old methods of teaching when kids today are used to interactivity that would blow most adults minds away. Video games are a good example of this. All the action that is taking place and the decisions that need to be made throughout a game is awesome. I even thought it would be great to have games where you scan yourself in, along with a favorite character (like Barney for younger kids), and learn/play throughout the lesson. Wouldn't it be cool to be racing your favorite character to win the spelling bee or math challenge and learning at the same time. The Jumpstart series of computer games is a great example of interactive learning that I am talking about although it doesn't have the ability to do the scanning part. Again I think it is an age thing as much as RSS specific. I have a nephew that does not have any special needs, as a matter of fact is in honors classes, who won't even do his school work and is the same age as my son. I also have a friend who's son is 2 years older that wa in honors for Science and Math who's son failed Science and Math this year...because it was boring and he didn't want to do the tedious work. As far as Colby is concerned, sometimes its like he's right on track and other times he just doesn't seem to get it. I have actually been in tears at work discussing this very issue with co-workers. The problem was three-fold: Did I not work with him enough, was he not trying hard enough, or was it the RSS and I was expecting too much? I came to the following resolves: the school system has special classes in place if he really needs them, if it is the RSS then I can't change it, and finally, but most comforting is that I was not going to ruin my relationship with Colby over this. He starts middle school next year and I have really tried to let go of this over the past 2 months. He will be on his own to be responsible for his grades and assignments. Currently he is A/B honor role and has been for the most part of his academic career. I think the biggest thing we need is to work on the school systems and their teaching methods. Well so much for my soapbox. Regards, mother of Colby almost 11 years old, 52 " , 52# kelsey my daughter I was just wondering if anyone is having the same problem i am? My 9 year old daughter kelsey is having a hard time paying attention in school and can't concentrate, last year she went from being on honor roll to this year barley passing, is this normal for a RSS child? Thank you Jackie mom of kelsey
Guest guest
Cara, Your right, it seems like 3rd grade just killed her! I did talk to her teacher and she said she gets along with everyone and does'nt have any problems that way but when it comes to work and theres alot of stuff on the paper they have to do kelsey just freaks out and can't do it, she is having a hard time doing one thing at a time. She goes tomarrow for a c scan because her migraines have gotten worse and more often. I have notice with kelsey if you put her under pressure she is getting the migraines and alot of math, ect.. on a paper is under pressure for her! It's not her to fall behind and do bad in school. I've covered all the aspects when she is in school and nothing seems to add up. Even at home it's gotten rough, i caught her yesturday getting mad and she said she was going to pull her hair out and she did!! She is'nt handleing her fustration! I almost died when she did that!!! I just can't understand what is going on! Any advice is welcome!! Thank you Jackie mom of kelsey

Guest guest
Dear Jackie, I think we have chatted earlier about our daughters. Dallas is in 1st grade - had her go thru kdg. twice bec. she had such problems with speech and I believe the auditory procesing as well. I'm just learning about rss but what i've read is that developmental problems inc. learning problems will be hard in the beg. but they will catch up. My son who is npt rss was the same way, where he did great up untill 3rd grd and then 4th grd was a nightmare. They said that there is a big change between 3rd and 4th and a lot more is put on the kids as far as learning. I asked teachers who taught elem. and they said this is true. being an 8th grd spec ed teacher, i feel like why don't we make this transition smoother then. I think there are also a lot of other variables. How the teacher runs the classroom, is your child bored, are there any attentional problems. Was Kelsey ever tested for learning difficulties. You might want to consider getting some educational testing done to get a true picture of her and rule out any attentional problems. She could be like my other 14 year old son where he would rather be off thinking about what motivates him instead of listening when the directions are being given, then you get behind fast. Ask her teacher exactly what is going on during the day, how the lessons are presented and what Kelsey is doing whenever teacher directions are being presented. Every child is different but like they say, Leave no child behind. My oldest son had these kinds of problems and now finally in 8th grade is making the honor roll. Guest guest
Cara, Thanks for the write back, no one else wrote! I don't believe we have a committee around here at least none that i know! As far as any problems before this year, well we realy did'nt have any! Besides kids teaseing her about her teeth or glasses and we put a stop on that! She goes tonight for a C Scan to see if anything is abnormal! But i have noticed that when she gets fustrated or mad she will tighten up her muscles and shake her head and while she is doing that she turns red, she also throws things or screems at someone, like her brother or sister!!! I've never had this problem before and it realy worries me. She has had 5 migraines and 3 regular headaches in the past 2 weeks. Her homework load has cut down because it's the end of the year and i've talked to her teacher all year and i just can't get whats going on! I'm realy worried about her test tonight! I feel so bad for her when she is sick, and unfortunantly she normaly does'nt know when she is getting a headache so they just pop up on her and boom she is sick!! Guest guest
Jackie, If Kelsey has too much on her plate and is getting frustrated to the point of more migraines, the cycle has to stop somewhere or she will start to give up or tell you things like I'll pull my hair out-and actually do it! It's the end of the school year now so not too much you can do for this year but, please go in and voice your concerns with her teacher and possibly refer her to the child study committee. Do you have somthing like this? Is there any summer school or remediation classes for kids that she could take to improve her skills? Has she been tested for learning problems through the school system? If not you would really want to get this in order because it can take sixty working days before they have to test her if the child study committee believes this is necessary. I have to go but write back with some more info. Guest guest
Jackie, Just in case it helps, I'll share my experience with migraines. I had a migraine-equivalent seizure disorder through my teens. I used to see a ball of colors, like some people see after getting a flash picture taken. It would go around my head and I would twitch each time it did. Afterwards I would have a bad headache and not see well. It would tend to happen correlating with my meunstral cycle, and it went away after puberty. They said that the hormonal shift during puberty caused it. They tried several medications that didn't really work well, but Dilantin finally helped - I finally got this after having a grand mal seizure. They said that the migraine part could be hereditary. I saw the color ball in my childhood on rare occasions. Have you had Kelsey checked by a neurologist? We didn't get any satisfactory care at all until my gym teacher saw me having one and suggested the possibility of petit mal. The pediatrician didn't think of it before then. You might want to check out what a neurologist would say - I think they treat migraines... Inga

Guest guest
Jackie, I feel so badly for not writing/responding to your message. I guess I have been so busy with my own situations here that I have not really done a great job of supporting others. I always feel bad when no one responds to someone's call for help. That being said, I think you have had some good suggestions about lightening the workload for Kelsey. That is a good place to start. Another thing you may want to consider is some psychotherapy intervention. It seems like Kelsey reacts in anger a lot in the way that Max used to react. He still does a little bit, but it is so much better!!! While he did not have head migraines, he did have abdominal migraines and they made his, and our, life miserable. He started out with a great psychologist and saw her twice a week for a year. Now he goest to her once a week and attends a Saturday morning social skills class. He is a different child. He has learned how to handle his anger and frustration in a much more productive way and the stomach aches have gone away. I don't know how you feel about medication, but there are a whole list of meds for kids that will also help with this situation. Max takes his share of meds and they have really helped. As you may or may not know, last August Max was diagnosed with Tourette's Syndrome and that made things so much more complicated and added to his stress. Thankfully we have found the right combo of meds and therapy and he is, for now, not having any noticeable tics. They will return, unfortunately, but at least things are under control for now. If you would like to, please email me privately. I can talk to you more about it and maybe we can brainstorm together. My address is magicrss@ hotmail.com. Guest guest
Jackie, One of our pastor's wives is a nurse who gets terrible migraines, and I heard that she has to inject herself in order to relieve them at times. As hard as it is to start injecting (I have that experience with Tim's GH), it might be worth looking into... I think it might not be something that is as commonly done, but then her degree of migraines may not be so common, either.
