Guest guest
Hi Barbara, I'm the one mentioning that I have the 1mg tabs of prednisone. And, ypour doc is correct, that there are different types of prednisone and doses. However there are methods for equating them from one to another. For instance, medrol (sp) packs are listed as 4mg tabs when in reality they equate to 5mg tabs. At this point, do what your doc recommends since he knows your meds. and the specifics. In my last visit to the doc. he mentioned that when on the lower doses of prednisone, and after having been on it for a long time, it was harder to drop 1 or 2 mg then it is on higher doses and dropping a higher amount. For instance, at 5 mg cutting down to 2.5 mg is a 50% reduction, and at 50 mg reducing to 45mg is only a 10% reduction. So, tapering slowly at the lower doses is the way to go. I'm down to 8mg per day, and on Wed. I step to 7mg, then the next to 8mg, and down to 7mg etc... for a week or so, then stay at 7mg for a week or so. It seems to be working. Good luck on your taper schedule... Terry > Hi -- > > I called the doctor and was told to keep taking 1/2 tablet (2.5mg) of > Prednisone every other day for another week, then call in. Guest guest
Hello group, I joined this group last year in November and your advice has been very useful to me in improving my day-to-day living. When I do my prednisone taper, I am very fine till I go down to 2.5 mg/day. However, as soon as I move to next level, 2.5 mg every alternate day, I begin to have loose motions, sometimes inflammation in my weight carrying joints (knee and ankle). My guess is that this is happening because I have been on prednisone for a long time (over 3 months), and my adrenal glands have shut down. Would anyone have any suggestions, as to how can I kick start my sleeping adrenal glands again? Perhaps by another milder tapering schedule? Does anyone have any prednisone taper schedules that they would like to share? One day I will write about how BTVC and generous people like Marilyn saved my life. I read this book just on the eve of my doctor deciding to go for colostomy ( I was in hospital under constant morphine sedation for abdominal pain, and daily 300 mg of IV prednisone). I decided to give this book a chance, immediately felt better in one week, and the rest is history J Now if only I could get off this 2.5 mg/day dosage for good… Secondary question: What’s the difference between prednisone and prednisolone? Does it affect the body differently? Is one more potent than the other, i.e. is 1mg of prednisone same as 1 mg of prednisolone? Thank you. Ritesh from California Email: rlal@... Guest guest
Hi Ritesh, I have not done the taper without using Entocort which is basically synthetic prednisone without the side effects. It costs$800/mo as opposed to the generic price of $4 but I bet the doc has free samples. I would take both Entocort and prednisone and stop the prednisone and a couple of weeks later taper the Entocort. Good luck. Terri 2.5 yrs. Guest guest
Here is something I saved from my early days on the Long Island List which may be helpful for those trying to wean off prednisone: To those trying a slow prednisone wean, Since Ben is 9, he sees a pediatric GI who follows an extremely conservative prednisone weaning schedule that maybe some of you " older " folks would be interested in. I think this schedule is typical for kids but I don't know about adults. Of course, check with your doctor first. It starts when you get down to 20 mg. two weeks - alternate 20mg/15mg every other day two weeks - alternate 20 mg/10mg every other day two weeks - alternate 20 mg/5mg every other day two weeks - alternate 20 mg/0 mg every other day two weeks - 15 mg every other day two weeks - 10 mg every other day two weeks - 5 mg every other day two weeks - 2.5 mg every other day Be well, Caryl mom of Ben, Crohn's 1 year, SCD 3 weeks — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund
Guest guest
You should know, however, that for some people, Entocort doesn’t work well or at all. Which doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try it to see if it works for you. It’s not a very powerful drug. If you’re taking 40 mg. of Prednisone you may not feel the Entocort at all. I’m fairly drug sensitive (my maximum toleration for prednisone is 10 mg), and Entocort did nothing disernable for me. n From: BTVC-SCD [mailto:BTVC-SCD ] On Behalf Of Terri and Kurt Sent: Thursday, March 12, 2009 2:21 PM To: BTVC-SCD Subject: Re: Prednisone taper Hi Ritesh, I have not done the taper without using Entocort which is basically synthetic prednisone without the side effects. Guest guest
Hi Ritesh, I had the same problem at 2.5, I can't do the alternate day therapy either. What I did was stay at 2.5 for a month and then cut that in half. I had to use tylenol for the joint pain that you mention, but after a few weeks I was fine without the pred. Take it slow and your adrenals will eventually pick up again.
