Guest guest
Thanks to everyone who answered my post on throat problems. It all made very interesting reading. It would appear there are very many causes of the symptoms I describe, some serious and some not so serious. I hadn't known that the throat contained a joint, this surprised me. Maybe the RA is affecting this joint because I can hear a clicking sound when I move my head from side to side. I will ask my rheumie and also the ENT I am seeing to look into this, but I'm not so sure that is what is causing the problem. From everything I've read I think it likely that the feeling high up in my throat just behind my nose is a dry patch associated with the dry mouth and throat I have been experiencing. It is a really horrible feeling and this may have caused me to become anxious which caused the feeling of obstruction lower down the throat. Apparently there is a condition known as Cricopharyngeal Spasm or Globus Hystericus which is brought on by anxiety and it can take several weeks to resolve itself. It causes a feeling of having a lump in the throat or of something being stuck there and can cause a clicking sound on swallowing. My doctor already told me that if it is dryness caused by Sjogren's that there is nothing that can be done for the dry patches behing the nose. Nasal inhalers contain steroids which make the problem worse and drinking water doesn't touch it. I use an artificial saliva spray when my mouth is particularly dry but again this has no affect high up in the throat. I have stopped using the gas fire which makes the air in the room very dry and I have tried inhaling steam over a bowl of hot water, but nothing really has much affect. Hopefully if I can try to stop focusing on the sensation the anxiety will lessen which will at least make the feeling of obstruction lower down to go away. Thanks again for all your replies. Guest guest
Hi Alot If this obstruction is further down your throat (under your Adam's apple) then it could be an enlarged thyroid gland, possibly. If it is affecting your breathing, I would get down to the doctor's office as soon as possible ...
