Guest guest
So my fellow SCD'ers.. I was not expecting that this colonoscopy would give me less info than I had before entering the scope... The prep went by relatively smoothly- I did Miralax and a Magnesium laxative and I also followed Marilyn's instructions for simple foods for 3 days prior to exam. I was squeeky clean. I experienced some nausea and chills but nowhere like what I went through with Fleet Phosphosoda. What a life altering difference OMG! I drank a lot of broth and used copious amounts of salt. I made jello out of home-made apple juice and I drank E-Lyte water. I faired well not even needing the Zofram. I could not drink all the Miralax with-in 4 hours- it took me 8 hours. For the scope I felt mild pins in my shoulders from the Propofol and before I could complain I was out. There was question a few years ago if disease spread to my left side and thankfully the whole left side if perfectly healthy " in the pink " YAY! Sadly, as the scope reached the first stricture in the Transverse colon the scope could not go through- they even switched it to a scope smaller than the pediatric scope and it would not fit through the stricture. This is a problem since I have an alleged Mass in the Ascending colon. According to the images in my small bowel series and when I had a bowel Obstruction 8 years ago- the worst stricture is in the Hepatic Flexure. So they would need to get through 2 major strictures to biopsy this mass. This does not include the other significant strictures I have nor the amount of scarring. They could of ballooned these strictures but my GI decided against it since it puts me in a high risk it will close up at some point and I would need to come in periodically to balloon every stricture and this might be very painful for me to deal with because he said that the ballooning will weaken the tissue. He explained that if it was one or two strictures it wouldn't be a problem but the kind of scarring I have puts me in a different bracket for Cancer too. He also explained that if this was classic UC- all of this would be surgically removed ASAP. As cancer rates with UC are much higher than with CD. With these kind of strictures and scarring I cannot get proper colonoscopy monitoring for Cancer for the polyps and psuedo polyps that I already have. Not biopsying the mass is a problem but the GI said the kind of stricture I have is a bigger threat to my well being right now. He explained that obstruction is a huge concern. He doesn't know how I am existing and living. He explained to me at this point there are no medications to help! So, he wants me to get surgery and since it is all on the right side I can do it laprascopically without an ostomy and be out of the hospital with-in 5-7 days with a recovery at home of about 5-6 weeks. They would take everything out including about 1 foot of my small bowel. But we don't know the status of my small bowel since the disease has always been so extensive and a scope could never get in. The doc explained to me that I would need to take bile salts after the surgery (which I have no idea what this would mean for possible upper GI issues) and I would not have short bowel syndrome since I have enough small intestine. Which I don't know what that means if they reattach diseased small intestine- if this is a different problem? So I need to consult 2 surgeons (I need 2 opinions for my personal mental health) and I am waiting for the current biopsy results although it does not include biopsies from an alleged mass. This diet really saved my life. I was really ill before it and it is just no wonder. The GI said my intestines look like sausages with kinks in an Italian Deli. Anyway.. That's it for now and hopefully I will straighten out from this prep solution and anesthesia. Big hugs to all.. Thanks for the prayers. Please continue for me.
