Guest guest
Janie - thanks for posting this as it is very informative. I also agree with - totally confusing. is right about hormone supplements reacting differently over time and for each individual. But with so many overlapping symptoms, how do we determine the true cause? Do we need estrogen or progesterone or adrenal support, etc.? My new PCP wants to send me to ob-gyn for hormone testing, but are they the most knowledgeable? They are the so-called specialists that put me on synthetic HRT 15 years ago after my hysterectomy. Don't endos handle that stuff, too, since all these hormones are so interrelated? I'm experimenting with the progesterone cream now to see if it helps anything..... sigh......... .... joan > Well, I for one am totally confused about hormones. > > R. One symptom of progesterone excess is low level depression and also fatigue...the thing is, women sometimes fail to realte it to progesteone when it has worked so remarkably for them for such a long time..but when you get to a place where your deficiency has been addressed, excess can happen with doses you have always used. It really is an individual thing. I used high doses of 10% progesteone cream non-stop for 3-1/2 years until I reached a point where such a large dose of it no longer gave me the benefits I had been getting (diuretic, energy, optimization of my thyroid meds, absence of " estrogen dominant " symptoms.) Now, at 55 and having been without a period since a little past age 53, I am now using progesterone 12 days per month, a low-level tri-est, every day (per Schwartzbein and some of the anti-aging doctors) and I'm getting a period again since June. I feel great. I think if a woman is going to take estrogen, she needs to allow a period to come and shed the uterine lining that builds up each month. I think it is an individual choice and depends on many factors, but especially how well you feel on natural HRT....which has been in use since the 60's and does not give a person the side effects that synthetic HRT is notorious for. It is a new area of research, for sure...and no one doctor has all the answers, as you mentioned. One think I have surmised by watching myself and my friends is that no one hormonal supplement works the same way in the same amounts we always used, forever - we are changing, and therefore our requirements and the amounts our bodies are producing are changing. We are all different as well, with how much our bodies make to begin with...Uzzi Reiss outlines the three types of hormonal profiles among women...we are different in what our bodies produce even in our primes..and so it makes sense we would not have the same requirments as every other woman out there when we attempt to replace what we are no longer producing. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/WmnsHormones
Guest guest
>>>>>I suspect that there have been many women ahead of us who allowed meno to be meno, and had no problems. Yes, Janie. Like your example, my mother also never took any hormone supplements, nor her mother. Neither did her sister, my Aunt, who, like me, had a hysterectomy at 40. BUT..... none of them suffered from hot flashes like I did, either...... Gosh...... we learn so much....... but I still don't know what to do about so many of these health issues. .... joan
Guest guest
What's so bad about a warm (or hot?) flash, anyway? LOL I'm sure there are some women for whom hot flashes are a mere inconvenience but for others they are absolutely debilitating. I share your philosophy that menopause is a natural event, so is childbirth but I wouldn't have wanted to go through it without pain relief. I am using just progesterone but without it I would be drenched all day and all night and lying awake for hours on end is no fun at all (especially when your partner is sound asleep1) Lynda (in the UK)
Guest guest
>>What's so bad about a warm (or hot?) flash, anyway? LOL<< AH from the mouths of babes! LOL Hot flashes and night sweats ARE debilitating! I can remember hundreds of nights having to actually change my sheets they were so wet from me sweating, and even having to sleep on the couch as the whole bed was wet! I had a Hysterectomy at the old age of 27 so I can tell you about ALL the symptoms of suddenly having NO female hormones. I punched out my BF.. Had to jump up to do it and it was literally for nothing, then I took a handful of sleeping pills cause I felt so rotten for my rotten temper. I used to drive out to the country to scream in my car just to relieve the tension I felt constantly. The cat on a hot tin roof FITS! Tears for anything and nothing, headaches like you have never imagined. Yes, most women do not go through menopause like this. Thank God! But some women have these same symptoms even in a normal menopause. I don't believe HRT is for every woman, but till you've been there, please don't knock the ones that seek it out.Being in a pet business I probably felt more guilt than most over taking Premarin for years, but it was survival. It was not to relieve minor discomforts as many would believe, and I heard that from my fellows in dogs too that had not been there. NONE of the creams or yam products worked for me. Progesterone creams then were like using any cream, and totally did not touch my symptoms. I needed estrogen. Of course my DR let me stay on it way too long and I eventually went into estrogen dominance, and now a small amount of Progesterone cream is all I use, but I DO still have many hot flashes and night sweats. The rest has finally abated though. I have often wondered if I had gone through menopause normally if I would have needed the estrogen, but I guess I will never know. My grandmother went on Valium.. that's what they used to give women for menopause symptoms, cause as you know, women things were all in our heads. Thank God we are going beyond that way of thinking! Guest guest
I have been dreaming of " Groom Cruise Alaska " (yes there is such a thing!) for several years now! I did get rid of them with Premarin, I am just not willing to go that route any longer as that is the only remaining symptoms I have. Guest guest
Yes the doctors were a lot dumber back then...my mom's doctor put her on speed while she was pg with my little brother...she would buzz around the house cleaning like a freak and eat half a sandwich a day... " healthy " The Valium was the " Prozac " of the time...they think if they dope you up enough you'll go away and they can relax, lol..had a lot of nutty housewives trying to get off of Valium...not a fun withdrawal. ) ) Re: Re: ALL ABOUT PROGESTERONE > > In a message dated 9/2/2004 11:17:39 AM Eastern Standard Time, > artisticgroom@... writes: > > > YUP when you figure out she became a drug addict from it!
