Guest guest
Why does it take the gut so long to heal and that is a ongoing, lifetime ?When you cut yourself the body heals, but with the gut even after eating gf/scd takes a lifetime, doesnt it?-- JHscd 4 yearscd
Guest guest
JH - When I started on SCD, I thought that the BTVC book said people could be completely healed (or even cured) within 1-2 years. It may even say that. However, it has finally sunk in that we are missing the capability to break down the complex carbs that have created our symptoms ( just like diabetics are missing the capability to break down sugars) . So ... even though we may be completely HEALED, if we start feeding our gut with the same things we ate before, the symptoms will come back and we will be sick again. Just like diabetics, if they start eating things they shouldn't, they will be sick. I have recently started using Digest Gold digestive enzymes, and they do seem to help if I eat something that I think might be marginal. I am really well healed and can eat everything that's SCD legal without any problems - like raw salads multiple days per week, etc. But the other day, I went out to breakfast and forgot to ask what kind of cheese was on the omelette I ordered. I'm pretty sure it was mozzarella ... so I ate an enzyme before the omelette and didn't get any reaction from it. I also just had some minor surgery and needed to take pain meds for a couple of days. I took the enzymes right before the pain pills since I know they contain lactose. Other than one day of getting constipated from the codeine in the pain pills, my gut has been fine. Some day I will venture further afield from SCD and try other foods along with the enzymes, but I am so grateful that I learned what caused my UC and how to manage it with my diet, I'm really not that tempted to stray. I just wish the medical community would embrace the science Elaine learned. Guest guest
Just a question. When we cut our finger, it goes red and gets inflamed. But we are rather pleased because we know that the inflammation is just our immune system jumping in to fight off the invading bacteria. We don't, as far as I know, talk about an auto-immune reaction. Why for CD do people talk about an auto-immune disease? Glad for enlightenment. Because it is an autoimmune response -- the body's immune system attacks itself instead of a foreign pathogen. -- Cheers, DF in MA UC June '07 SCD Nov '
