Guest guest
Thanks Mara for your response. LOL I'm Tracie, forgot to include my name! I'm really looking forward to the SCD and fail to understand what the big deal is about 'gasp' cooking your own healthy food. Good luck to you. Guest guest
Hi! About the being scared about yogurt, I was too! But it's actually one of the easiest things I make now. (I'm not sure if that's reassuring or not =) ) I got a yogurt maker for 20$ online, and it makes making yogurt very easy. It is a little time consuming heating the milk, but if you have a book or some music to listen to it goes pretty fast. I myself eased into the diet over time, just eliminating things one by one.Good luck!ALyssaUC Sept 08SCD 1 monthno meds! Our 7 y/o son was just diagnosed with Crohn's. Guest guest
Thanks Alyssa for your thoughts. I did check out a video on www.ccccibs.com and it showed how to make it. I like your idea about getting a yogurt maker and wrote that down on my list of things to get. I'm so thankful that there is this group! I'm running around like crazy at the moment because my Mom just had a heart attack, and we're trying to arrange things. The main thing with making everything from scratch is that before you can make something, you sometimes have to make the ingredients! I just about went crazy my first year, because I'd think, " Oh I'm going to make... " and then I'd remember that I needed to make yogurt first. Or I was going to make... and I didn't have any homemade tomato sauce. And so forth and so on. Now, though, I can't imagine eating any other way. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund

Guest guest
I know what you mean! I don't get why cooking horrifies people so much? I'm not exactly good at it (yet), but it doesn't horrify me. Funny story: A few years ago I was visiting family, and some of us were enjoying the leftovers of my grandma's superb cooking. My aunt shows up with Taco Bell and Mc's and announces, " The REAL food is here! " Can you imagine thinking that crap was better than grandma's home cooking? My aunt has had cancer twice now, but has yet to answer the clue phone. Good luck! Your son is very lucky that you're willing to put a lot of work into helping him get well! There are a lot of yummy SCD recipe sites out there, so there will be no shortage of ideas on what to cook . Holly Crohn's SCD 12/01/08 > > Thanks Mara for your response. Guest guest
I splurged on the Excalibur dehydrator. Making yogurt it a lot easier when you can do 8 quarts at once! Sometimes ebay has some good coupons, which can bring down the price a bit (I used a 30% off coupon for my Excalibur). Holly Crohn's SCD 12/01/08 > > > > Thanks Alyssa for your thoughts. Guest guest
I'm amazed at the number of times people ask me, " When do your kids get to eat real food again?! " Sometimes I just sort of let there be a long pause before answering and " sometimes " it clicks that what they're eating is not food at all! Kelley W. > > > > Thanks Mara for your response. Guest guest
Hi, It takes a bit of getting-used to! This List is incredibly supportive and kind, and knowledgeable. There are lots of yogurt makers available. Essentially, they just keep it at the right temp while it ferments. Many come with little containers. I have been using a borrowed one to see if I'd actually do it; I have now made yogurt for a number of months. Have taken to using microwave to heat milk in glass measuring cup sometimes, stove, sometimes. Have found the EasiYo, which accepts all sizes of container--as does the Excalibur dehydrator. After some thinking and getting feedback, decided to go with the EasiYo. My friend's Excalibur is great for yogurt, but neither of us had great luck with dehydrating; I have a dehydrator, found that I was not getting the hoped-for crunch snacks, and making jerky, which it does well, was not a priority. So: EasiYo. Am interested in knowing if other folks have been more successful with dehydrator snacks? Would love to hear experiences. best wishes, Tracie, oh, and your son gets to have yummie smoothies! Hooray for frozen bananas!
