Guest guest
Hi This one is not hard to answer, but you really should see your doctor for evaluation. In the context of IgAN, there are a few things that could potentially cause this kind of shortness of breath: High blood pressure can sometimes cause shortness of breath if the BP is severely elevated. Anemia from low hemoglobin can cause shortness of breath. Fluid retention can cause shortness of breath (especially when lying down such as at night). Other than that, there are plenty of other medical conditions that could cause it, so, better safe than sorry. Some BP meds might actually cause shortness of breath as a side effect, too. What you describe sounds like it could be from any of the above. Did you happen to eat an unusual amount of sodium the past few days? That might cause some extra fluid retention to settle in the lungs as you were sleeping. Get it checked out though. This is definitely something that needs to be evaluated. Guest guest
, I'm in early stage IgAN and I also have shortness of breath periodically. In fact, it's happened over the last couple of days off and on for the first time in a while. It's pretty much like you described. It's not like I'm gasping for breath or anything like that but the quantity of air I'm breathing in doesn't seem to be normal. It is annoying. I even went to the ER a few months last year when it first happened for 3 days in a row. I called my doctor's office on a Friday and they couldn't get me in so they told me to go. They ran a whole slew of tests including CAT scan, echocardiogram, 24 hour heart holter, etc. Everything came back normal and they chalked it up to stress. I'm not sure if I buy stress as the culprit because when it happened I was going through a period of time where my job had just become much LESS stressful. I just tolerate it because it comes and goes, but I've always wondered if there was some relation. I really don't know. -Jack > > Hello all, > > Last night my dogs woke me up to go outside (and for the thousandth > time I told them it was the last time...). Guest guest
Thanks Pierre. I confess to a can of soup yesterday for a fast and portable lunch. I'm not on a low sodium diet yet, but maybe it's time. My next appointment isn't until the 15th, so maybe I'll send my neph an email. I just didn't want to abuse the access privilege or have him think I'm jumping at shadows. I'm glad you're back too! Guest guest
Hi Jack, Does it happen when you lay down, like mine did? Pierre may have hit the nail on the head, in my case, when he suggested high sodium leading to fluid retention. Next time it happens to you, think back to what you'd been eating that day. That'd be a sort of easy solution to an annoying problem. I'll definitely behave myself today. Guest guest
, I don't really seem to notice it when I'm lying down. I also don't seem to notice it when I'm exerting myself by playing sports or exercising. I seem to notice it most often when I'm sitting down such as driving a car or sitting at my desk at work. It's strange. I don't follow any sort of restricted diet either although I have started to somewhat avoid sodium by not putting salt on anything and trying to eat foods I know are lower in salt. My BP has been normal and I take it at least every other day. I'm sure I'll eat a whole pizza come Super Bowl Sunday. That should be enough sodium to see if there's any correlation! -Jack > > > > > > Hello all, > > > > > > Last night my dogs woke me up to go outside (and for the > thousandth > > > time I told them it was the last time...). Guest guest
Even I have the feeling that my heart is literally pounding inside for no apparent reason...I can feel the heartbeat in my head ...when I checked my pulse rate twice, it was 100 and 102...i asked my neph about this and he told me that it is not that big a deal, but just to make sure evryhting is ok, he said that he will give me some instrument which will monitor the heart once it starts pounding... and regd shortness of breath...whenever I climb the stairs to my apt (i live in the second floor), by the time I get into the house, i am breathing heavily...but it will settle in less than 5 min.... Guest guest
Hi , I agree with that you need to get the shortness of breath and rapid pulse checked out by a physician. Better to not take any chances. Unless you have severe anemia or severe edema, you should not be having those symptoms. Please let us know ok? In a message dated 2/2/2005 9:46:36 A.M. Guest guest
Hi Priya, I am sorry but I have not had these symptoms so I cannot shed any light for you. I do think that if any member has any question about heart function or trouble breathing, it is always prudent to be on the safe side and have it checked out. Guest guest
Hi , Thanks for your concern. My neph mentioned possibly adding another bp medication when he took me off lisinopril because of a high potassium lab. So my bp probably isn't as controlled as it should be right now. The shortness of breath hasn't been as bad as the other night, though it comes back sporadically. Today I've started to get a wet cough, so perhaps it's only a chest cold coming on. I am tired, but it doesn't seem bad enough to be anemia. My fingers have been swelling, and lately they haven't gone back down, but it isn't horrible swelling. It's just enough to change the fit of my ring. It's reassuring to hear others dealing with similar problems. Unless anything gets worse, I'll wait and see if it isn't a chest cold and keep my neph appointment scheuled on the 15th. Guest guest
Hi, I am so surprised that so many of us are experiencing the same symptom...i was wondering why we could feel our heartbeat when we are lying down than in any other position....i am not sure about my sodium intake in other foods that I buy...but i usually take less amount of salt if I am eating at home(and mostly we eat at home)...May be people like Pierre or can throw some light in this issue....
