Guest guest Posted July 5, 2006 Report Posted July 5, 2006 Hi , I hope everything goes well for you. Remember to ask any last minute questions you have before your surgery. There has always been something I forgot to ask before and because of the anesthesia I didn't remember until I got home and started coming to my senses. I have just finished my fourth and hopefully my final surgery. I had bilateral mastectomies w reconstruction in Feb 05. Its been a long road but I am glad I did it. This last surgery was nipple and areola recon. Everything went well as I am sure it will for you. Make sure you have all your perscriptions filled and ready for you when you get home. I will light a candle for you and keep you in my thoughts. Guest guest Posted July 5, 2006 Report Posted July 5, 2006 Theresa - I had breast mound reconstruction at the time of my mastectomy. The plastic surgeon said he would have to do the nipple and areola recon later. Can you tell me, where do they get the tissue from to do this part? Does it look at all natural? Guest guest Posted July 6, 2006 Report Posted July 6, 2006 , I think it depends on a lot of what the doctor has experience in doing first. Sometimes they graft the skin for the nipple from the inner thigh or I hate to tell anyone this they can use skin from a cadaver. Another is a nip tuck using the skin on the breast itself that's what I had done. then, they also do the tattooing at that time. After everything settles down and no complication with the areaola they inject this new material into the nipple called radiance. They cannot inject it at the time of the construction because they said that the body will absorb the radiance material and the nipple will not be firm. So, in six weeks if all goes well I will be radiant heeheehee. Or the doc is skimming some off the top of all his patients that is why he didn't put it in at the time of the recon. Just kidding. My plastic surgeon came highly recommended. I did the skin spearing mastectomy in Feb of 05 with tissue expanders. I went in about every three to four weeks to have them filled to stretch the tissue, muscle and whatever else needed stretching. Then in Aug. 05, I had the expanders removed and my implants put in. wahoo. In Nov 05 I had to have a complete lift on the right side because it had stretched too much and a z-plasty to loosen things up more on the left side. The left was my trouble side.I had previous breast cancer in the left breast and the radiation kinda did a number on that boob. they had to move some tissue around in there to fill up the gap. So, last Tues. I went in and had the recon. work done. everything looked good until Fri. evening. The area around my left areola started getting red and irritated. I called the doc and they put me on more antibiotics with warm compress. So today it is looking better but the doc wants me to come in to see what might be going on. More antibiotics. they want to do a culture maybe some blood work make sure nothing else is going on. But to get back to your questions as how they look. Not bad. My right one looks almost normal just 1 week later . My left one well, I think the jury is still out on that one. It's looking a lot better that is was on Sat. My doc. is 3 hours away so its like planning a day trip every time I have to go. And my husband bless his heart takes off work to take me when I am not able to drive myself. Also if I go with someone I can get in the carpool lane. All my doctors are in Los Angeles. The freeways can be very hazardous to your health. Luckily, we used to live there and we know how to get around the famous 405 and 5 freeways there. Even though we all have bc our bodies react in tons of different ways so ask a lot of questions and try not to stress out too much. good luck and I hope I have helped a little. Sorry for rambling on so. theresa wrote: Theresa - I had breast mound reconstruction at the time of my mastectomy. The plastic surgeon said he would have to do the nipple and areola recon later.
