Can someone tell me what this procedure is like? I hear outpatient -

is it under general? Is it an all day thing? Do you feel ok the next

day? What's the deal

I was there a couple of hours and it was not bad at all. I had the procedure

at 8:30 am and by 10:30 am was being released, and hubby and I went to drop

off the kids at some classes and had breakfast at Cracker Barrel!

Love,

I didn't have a port but from what I understand it doesn't take long at all. You

might be a little sore for a few days.

Hi Marisa and all!

Ask for a prescription for numbing cream! It is wonderful and you won't even

feel that stick each time!

Blessings,

Since I had already had a lumpectomy and mastectomy, the port was a piece of

cake... out-patient. Can't remember how long it took, but not that long and dh

took me home. It was under general, but not as much as the other surgeries. I do

remember the port was uncomfortable for a few days.

i have a port - it was an outpatient procedure done

under general anesthesia...I recieve all chemo through

the port - though the initial *stick* hurts - it

really is a good thing for me - no constant sticking

for blood draws, etc...and the " A " of A/C is a

" push " --and easier to do throgh the port - less damage

to your viens.

you'll have another scar---but it's not a permamanat

thing, ya know?

Thanks to those who responded. I am scheduled for port insertion on

Monday. They said I will have a MAC (?), more than a local, but less

than a general. Fever is down now, post tylenol.

I had a port inserted with only a shot to deaden the arm.

Didn;t take as long as the dentist and not nearly as anxiety producing

for me LOL

The stick each time for blood checks and chemo was not uncomfortable

My only problem was I did not have a lot of fat in my arm for burying

the port so the port stuck out a little- and I am clumsy and prone to

bump anything and everything.

Keep us posted on your progress and I wish you rest and recovery,

Andree

Thanks Andree and Steph.

I go on Monday; it is local with a little sedation (I think kind of

like a colonoscopy). My oncologist pretty much insisted that I get

the port; I am having chemo now, chemo after surgery, and probably

herceptin for a year after that. The port is built to take 2,000

sticks - can you even imagine?

Ironically enough, I also have to go to the dentist on Monday. I

have 2 crowns that need doing; my oncologist said they have 2 weeks

to do dental week, then no more. It stirs up bacteria in the mouth

and can cause infection.

My port is in my chest (on the right side - the side

opposite my cancer) - and it does stick out alittle-

and when my son hugs me, he can feel it against his

cheek, wheereupos he'll say to me " ooh, sory ma,

sorry, did I hurt you ma??? "
