Guest guest
Thyroid - Guardian of Health by Philip G. Young, M.D. is available from www.trafford.com. I highly recommend this book. Here's a book review for everyone. In the preface he makes some good statements about how poor thyroid knowledge is in the medical profession: " Unfortunately, basic misunderstandings on thyroid function exist in the medical community which block the help which would otherwise be available to solve many of the health problems of our nation " . " The ignorance in the medical community concerning thyroid needs to be overcome " . " A true understanding of the thyroid and its relationships would revolutionize medicine, giving hope and healing to many who are facing seemingly insurmountable medical problems " . " Thyroid supplementation has an almost unbelieveable impact on the health of the individuals who have shown no thyroid problems on traditional blood testing " . He talks about how this problem has gotten worse because of the new generation of health care providers who rely on blood tests...and how hypothyroidism usually isnt even suspected. He is against pure T4 synthetics...and advocates dessicated products. Of particular interest is that he mentions problems which occur with thyroid metabolism WITHIN THE INDIVIDUAL CELL are far more common. And says " the problem of the improper conversion of T4 to the much more active T3 in the cells and the problem of thyroid resistance in which the body does not respond normally to the thyroid hormone present due to problems with the thyroid binding sites " ....that the problems are not detected by thyroid tests and the medical profession is usually ignorant to them. He believes hypothyroidism is the single most important health problem today. He mentions that a malfunctioning thyroid throws the whole endocrine system out of balance and the whole system needs to be brought back into balance. There's info on how thyroid hormone works in the nucleus of the cells...and is also active in the mitochrondria, the power plants of the cells. Environmental concerns are mentioned. In bold...he states " so a cardinal rule of treating thyroid patients is if the treatment with thyroid seems to make the patient worse in any way, add adrenal support " . A chart of " low thyroid " , " low thyroid & adrenal " , and " low adrenal " is shown. There is an excellent chapter on " the physical exam " ...and he mentioned something I hadn't heard before - that redheads are frequently low thyroid - even reddish highlights. He also mentions why some thyroid folks are not overweight - because they have poor absorption of nutrients. This chapter was so good - and mentioned so many physical hypo signs that I've had over the last 15 years - that I could only wonder where he brains were of all the doctors I have seen. There is a great chapter on " thyroid metabolism " . It's a bit technical, but good. He also says that " all types of hypothyroidism cause a T4 to T3 conversion problem " ....and go into why T4 alone will not return a person to a true thyroid balance. In fact, he says that just T4 actually suppresses the activity of the brain....making depression and mental symptoms worse. The next chapter is about " thyroid tests " ...and boy is it good. He answered a question I had about a friends labs who had a low TSH and low Free T3 but elevated Free T4. He says this is hypothyroid with liver disease! And one can easily see how the hypo could be missed if T3 labs aren't done - and the person would be labeled hyper. I think he also answers my question about why so many older ladies are taking teeny little doses of Synthroid. He says that older adults may start showing low or high TSH labs...when their thyroid hormone levels are actually totally normal. I think most of these folks get their synthroid based on the TSH...and this is probably why my mother in law has more symptoms of hyper than hypo...she doesn't need the extra T4. And of course he mentions antibodies making the blood tests totally invalid. And he also says " if there is a blood test that may eventually become the true 'gold standard' for thyroid testing, it will likely be the blood test for free T3 " . And then - a wonderful chapter on " the relationship of thyroid and adrenal hormones " . Most of this we've discussed here...but it's good information...and he states that " most individuals started on thyroid will require less than six months of adrenal support " . His next chapter is about " thyroid and adrenal preparations " with good info on everything. And then he has a chapter on " complications of therapy " . I thought it interesting that he mentions the research on osteoporosis is confounded by the fact that hypothyroid patients have thick, but weak bones...but then the bones thin out but become stronger on thyroid replacement therapy (and he means Armour). He says that if there is increased osteoporosis it is because a calcium and magnesium deficiency produced by the increased metabolism seen when thyroid levels are restored to normal. In bold, he states " the theory that extra thyroid will osteoporosis seems absurb in light of the fact that thyroid levels are much higher in young children than in adults " . There are sections on autoimmune disease and carbohydrate metabolism. Then..he has a chapter on how hypo each of the following (and he used some interesting case histories throughout the book): Circulatory system. One thing he mentions also is that it takes about two years on thyroid to gain the full protection from the thyroid hormone. Respiratory system. He mentions anemia is common. And there is so much good information in these chapters. He also mentions there is strong anecdotal evidence that adequate thyroid replacement in hypothyroid patients can have a significant impact on the incidence of cancer. Gastrointestinal Disorders. A significant impact. Talks about leaky gut, weight gain, gall bladder, liver....lots of good stuff. Nervous System. wonderful info. There is also a chapter on items " exclusively female " . Also chapters on on " infections " and just how the whole immune system is affected and one on " skin conditions " . He has a conclusion and states " unless the T3 levels are adquate, patients are functionally hypothyroid " ...and also some interesting " speculations on thyroid function " . And that's about it. I wish every doctor had a copy of this book. Cindi
