Guest guest
, I had my biopsy on a Friday and we asked the surgeon what he thought. He said he felt it was cancerous but the results would be in on Monday. First thing Monday morning my husband was on the phone getting the results. I wanted it asap and glad we got it over the phone. It was cancerous and I don't really understand the pathology report so other than the fact that I have cancer I really have little or no information. I saw a surgeon this morning and he could tell me very little, because the " protocols " that my HMO uses does the lumpectomy and a more complete biopsy at the same time. (I was initially diagnosed with a needle biopsy and they couldn't tell me from that if it has spread to the lymph nodes) Pre-op physical is next week, but surgery is not scheduled until the 11th of July. Now for my question. Is it normal procedure to be informed that you have a cancerous tumor on the phone? All of the providers I have talked to seem to think so and it just somehow seems inhumane and downright cruel to do it in this manner. Realistically I am to confused by what is happening and still in shock so don't really have any " serious " questions about the treatment and the path I will have to take just yet. I know that it sure left me in shock and very angry. Guest guest
I got my results, in person, the next day as I had to go in for a breast MRI. I asked if they had the results and they had them faxed over and the doctor, who did the biopsy, made time to see me. I even got a copy of the report, though it was incomplete. Mine was an unusual experience. Normally I would have gotten the results over the phone that day. I did ask the doctor, when he did the biopsy, if he thought it was cancer and he did. I knew from the moment I noticed the change in my breast that it was so. Ruth PS Learn as much as you can so you can make informed decisions! > > I just got partial results of a biopsy this week. Guest guest
Hi , I used to live very close to you, in Boulder... I miss it a lot. They biopsies won't tell you if it has spread to the nodes. And needle biopsy is not very reliable. It is very normal to be in shock and though it gets better, sometimes even after the treatmente I still feel a little in shock too. They shouldn't have told you like this. There is no end for people's lack of sensitivity... I found out about mine by the path report. I didn't want to wait for the doctor... But before it, my doctor broke the news that the situation was serious even if they didn't know the outcome. Hang in there, we are here for you. This group is awsome. Guest guest
, It is normal for you to be feeling shock. So did I. I had a lumpectomy May 1st, My surgeon said he didn't think it looked like cancer but would not know for sure until they got the results, May 8th I go in to check my incision. And get the results. It was cancer. All I remember was him saying I am so sorry. How I got home,,,I sure don't remember! Then I had to call my hubby and tell him. He had a 6 hr dirve to come home. The next day I called the Doctor back and told him to set up my other surgery (he needed to take out more tissue form where the lump was plus sentinel nodes, ) I had it done the 11th of may got the results back the 17th tissue clear nodes weren't. I asked him what is next,!!!! He said I would like to take out 2/3 more of your nodes. I said get me into an oncologist first and then I will decided. I saw the oncologist the 24th, After a very detailed discussion with him, It was decided that no more nodes where to be taken out, I would start cemo the 20 for 8 treatments then radiation the hormonal therapy for 5 yrs. So I just had my first Cemo this last Tues, Had to bad days but feeling better now. I guess my point is for me anyway,,,the faster I can get this all done the faster it will be to get my life back!!!! Hang in the as everyone will tell you in here it is not a death sentence anymore. Yes it is scarey what we have to go through but you got all these ladys in here to help you get through it! Talking about it always helps. Our prayers are with you!!! Guest guest
Good morning , so that you have to join this group, but what a group you have found. Wonderful bunch of people here. When my mother was diagnosed, she had to pry it out of him over the phone. She had had the biopsy and by time the results had gotten back he had gotten the flu so that left him out for even longer. His case manager called him at home and advised him that mom was trippin out a bit. I have always assumed that if it's bad news, they want to see you in person. I had expected mom appointment after the biopsy to be filled with information but it wasn't until after the lumpectomy that most of the information was given. Hope this helps and again, you have come to the right place for support. Hugs, Patti -- Newly Diagnosed I just got partial results of a biopsy this week. When we saw him the next morning, then he went over all the particulars. On the second biopsy, I think he did tell me over the phone. It didn't bother me as I did not want to wait any longer. I would have known if he said he wanted to see me, so this just cut right to the truth and then we talked about it. Not sure how other doctors handle that, but I was fine with his method. Guest guest
I will have lumpectomy and sentenial node surgery on July 12th. I had a core biopsy that indicated invasive ductual carcinoma. I will also get a more detailed biopsy report after surgery. I knew the biopsy results were not good because they insisted I come in to the office to discuss results. It was still a shock though. Everything is very overwhelming, but little by little the mind clears. Don't be hard on yourself for being emotionally upset, it's a very normal reaction. Guest guest
Thanks everyone for replying I don't think it upset me by just being told over the phone but with the way they handled the whole thing. The radiologist that called me said and I quote " I have the results of your biopsy you have cancer, I have made an appointment with a surgeon for you on July 7th " . I was informed on June 21st. She would give me no other information and I was expected to wait 16 days to get any more information. Of course my imagination was running wild. I had developed a reaction to the steri-strips they used for the biopsy and had to go see my regular doc, even she had a fit and forced them to move up the office visit and education part of my treatment but the psychological damage was already done and I went in with an extremely negative attitude. Just need a little reassurance that maybe I didn't overreact. Thanks! You guys seem great, and I really appreciate having someone that I can " talk " with. in Denver Patti wrote: Good morning , so that you have to join this group, but what a group you have found. Guest guest
> Hi , > Hi , Gee that almost sounds like I am talking to myself! Thanks for your kind words, but what has happened cannot be changed and after I had a long chat with God this afternoon I have decided that I have to let go of my anger and move forward with hope in the future. I just wish I could get some information about my particular case but until the lumpectomy I won't get anything at all. That is scheduled for the 11th of July, which seems forever away. Now on to a " fun " topic. We do have a lot in common, obviously the name but I too made my living from sewing. I no longer do work for clients because in addition to the breast cancer I also have Lupus, and that has caused arthritis in my hands and sometimes they get so sore that I cannot do much sewing. I have however found that I can do some piecework quilting and so have started to play with that. A few years ago my husband bought me an embroidery machine and I am having a great deal of fun with that as well. Now that I am going to have some forced quiet time I may just learn to digitize my own designs for that. You take care as well, How far along this bumpy road are you? I see by your signature that you are making chemo hats, if I can help I would love to. in Denver > > I think being told you have cancer over the phone is horrific! I get angry thinking about it.
