Hi,

My son n is 13 months old. His OT is really really pushing for

him to crawl. He isn't even holding his head up when he's on his

stomach. He's done it a couple times in the past though. I've read

posts in the past about kids that crawl, but drag their head on the

ground, but do most RSS kids never end up crawling?

Also, he seems to have EXTREMElY small hands and feet. My friend has

a baby six weeks old, and her hands and feet were bigger than his.

It doesn't seem to be a problem with every RSS kid from the pictures

I've seen, so I was wondering how many had this problem. I would

think he will end up walking really late with such small feet. HIs

therapist says he'll need orthodics.

Thanks,

, (Mom to n, 13 months, 13 lbs.)

I never crawled- just went from lying to walking at 18 months. I have no

idea if this is typical of RSS children or not, though.

Hi

My son (now almost 9 with RSS) crawled first (at normal expected age) by

dragging himself with his elbows. But then again, I've seen " normal " babies

who scuttle backwards instead of crawling and all kinds of weird behaviours.

But Adam did eventually get into the true crawling position, but that was at

10 months. As for the hands and feet, since birth I always thought Adam's

hands and feet were huge compared to his body. Actually the day before

yesterday I was shoe shopping for him and actually saw a chart that said

shoe sizes for ages (obviously for " normal " growing kids) and he was in the

low end of the right age. I was shocked. Kids his age do have that size

feet; so he has shoes that fit a " normal " almost 9 kid and he's really the

size of a 5 year old!! Very strange.

Wish I could be of more help.

Hi ,

My daughter never crawled as an infant and still has small hands and

feet. She couldn't hold her head up on her stomach too. Her PT also

tried to make her crawl but she just couldn't do it with the big head

and the small body. She used to scoot around and started walking at 21

months old and then crawling. She is walking pretty good though now at

25 months and her PT was concerned that kids who don't crawl might

fall a lot when they start walking, but Isabel didn't fall much. She

is on GH since she is 21 months and that is also helping her build up

the muscles.

Hope this helps,

Regards,

Mini

Hi ,

Our son is 18 months old (12 pounds 10 ounces or 5.725 kg and

26 inches or 66 cm) and doesn't crawl. He doesn't like to be on his

stomach at all. He rolls around to get from one end of the house to

another. His PT told me that he probably would never crawl but would

go from rolling to walking. He loves to be up on his feet (although

he can't pull himself up yet) and as soon as you stand him up, he

tries to walk (but we have to support most of his weight). His OT

( has lots of services) has been laying him on a big ball with a

toy in front and above him so he has to lift his head and torso to

reach the toy. This really seems to be helping him. still

wears a size one crib shoe and size 3-6 month cloths.

Hope this helps.

Hi -

My son, Dominic, crawled and walked on time. At first

he crawled with his head on the ground (which was

really cute). Dom's hands are small but his feet are

big. He wears an infant size 3.5, his ped has said he

has big feet. After being on this listserve for

awhile I have come to the conclusion that there are

some general, common characteristics of kids with RSS

but then there are a variety, wide ranging, host of

other characteristics which may or may not be

attributed to RSS. Of course this is just my opinion

and some of the others may not agree. I am glad your

son is receiving therapy. I would think he would need

to strengthen his neck muscles before crawling but

maybe this is just my assumption. Hope this helps.

Hi

My son was 6 lbs, when he started walking (at 10

months) but he started crawling at 9 months. Like you,

I would see 4 months olds with more meatier hands and

bodies then . He would also stay in a crawling

position until he could feel secure to move and then

would only take a couple of moves and then stop. I

always assumed because he was tired(carrying his big

head). But I also assumed that he started walking

early because of his older sibling. She was 21 months

old at the time. If n is able to stand or even

sit up. Sit him or stand him close to the sofa and

surround him with all sorts of pillows, throw toys on

top of the sofa (to try to instigate him to get up).

That really helped us. If I can be of any help, let me

know. Good Luck! -ali

Hi ,

My son Colin is 8 mo. and he has been crawling for about a month now.

He did start by pushing himself around on his head with his butt in

the air. It was pretty funny to watch! And then eventually he did

start lifting his head. He has been in PT since 3 mo. of age and I

believe it has made a huge difference in his development. He also has

extremely small feet and hands compared to his twin sister.
