I tried Minocin about 2 months ago but had such a bad flare (a herx reaction?) that my doctors had to take me off of it and put me back on the steroids. I'm currently on 20 mg of pred. I recently started taking a Zithromax 5 pack for something unrelated to my DM and wouldn't you know it, after a couple of days on the antibiotic, my rash started clearing up. Things are getting worse again now (another herx reaction?), so i'm just curious- does anyone have any experience with AP using zithromax as the main antibiotic? This was most likely a herx reaction which would mean the Minocin was working. It should have been temporarily stopped until the reaction subsided and then the Minocin re-introduced slowly until you reached the standard dose. Complete instructions for handling Herxheimers can be found in the FAQ on www.rheumatic.org. Mycoplasmas aren't the only organisms that can cause these diseases. Different organisms may require different antibiotics. Then too, sometimes more than one organism is involved necessitating the use of an additional antibiotic. Remember too, these organisms can overlay each other - with one antibiotic being required to deal with the top one and another antibiotic needed to deal with the underlying one.
