Guest guest
I think I understand your questions... From personal experience, Dominic is growing taller but not gaining much weight. In fact at his 24 month visit he had grown 3/4 of an inch but lost weight.. Does that help? Guest guest
, I don't know the answers! I can just tell you, with Darcy, from the very first his weight gain has continued to slow down - he is drifting away from the 3rd centile line all the time, and has only just put on 200g in the past 5 months.... while at the same time he is always getting a little closer to the 3rd centile for height.... and despite the worst weight gain ever, he's also grown more than usual <Sigh> I can't figure him out! His endo keeps insisting that if he doesn't gain more weight his height gain will drop off too, but it hasn't. Guest guest
Hi several times over the past 2 years has grown but not gained weight. My health visitor said that this can happen (perhaps she was trying to reassure me I don't know). has been on ght since November time and has shown good catch up growth (he is now on the 2nd centile for height and 0.4th centile for weight) despite having a terrible winter healthwise. Since the end of August has had no longer than 2 weeks without sickness - he catches a cough or virus, it runs its course for usually a fortnight and then he gets on his feet again, starts eating well and bang 2 weeks later he has picked up something else. I have stopped bringing him swimming and to his weekly session at our local mother and toddler group to try and minimise his risk of catching infections but it doesn't seem to have made any difference. Just before Christmas he caught the vomiting bug and had to go into hospital and get put on a drip which was a nightmare. He lost so much weight but the good thing is when he started eating again he seemed to make up for all that weight. currently has a chest infection and a TERRIBLE cough. He hasn't really eaten any solids in 10 days but showed a little interest in food today. I have continued with his daily injections of ght and I'm hoping for catch up soon. He has lost a lot of weight again. It is so worrying all of this but I suppose kids without rss have fluctuating weight although I know they don't seem to catch nearly as many infections. Hope this helps. Maeve mother of 2 months time winter will be over!! Re: Sapphire & Questions for discussion > I think I understand your questions... Guest guest
In regards to height gain rather than weight gain, our endo in Texas told us that all the calories were going toward linear growth rather than weight. ( I don't know if this makes any since at all, but that is what she said) Carmen, mom to Storm

Guest guest
Height and weight are correlated, to some degree. If there is caloric insuffiency, height gain will be suppressed, and in some cases, stop altogether. Height decline usually follows about 2-3 months AFTER weight decline. And as such, height increase is often seen about 1-3 months after a good weight gain (when there has been caloric insuffiency). However, once the " height catch-up growth " is achieved after the calories are increased, then the height will again level off to whatever is programmed into the child genetically (e.g., an RSS child). It would be at that time, if you were thinking of using GH, to start it. AFTER the caloric insufficiency has been resolved. I would encourage any parent who is seeing their child suddenly slow their weight gain down to examine " activity level " (besides the obvious - have they been sick). Our daughter 's first weight flattening/decline occured about 16-22 months old - which correlated to several months after learning to walk/run, when she was suddenly expending a good 20% more in calories. Again, at about 3.5 years, her weight flattened again, and it was when she began gymnastics AND preschool 3 times a week. Again at 5.9 yrs, it was when she began swimming 2-3 times a week (on top of her normal activities). In all these cases, once we were able to find a way to get another 20% + calories into her, her weight once again picked up. I have no experience or knowledge about the supplements. I do know that the GI doctor I booked for the MAGIC convention ( " How to Get Your Underweight Child to Gain Weight " is also the Director of his hospital's Alternative Medicine division). We are hoping he is going to be able to provide any " unconventional " ideas for gaining weight. > Dear All > Just had Sapphire's latest stats done 31.5months 21lbs 5oz and 88 cms. > There seem's to be an improvement in her height but her weight is down (or should I say hasn't gone up in 5 months or so). > I feel a bit 'funny' about the results as Sapphire hasn't been too well over the last 4 months so hasn't been eating so much. > Usually if her intake goes down she doesn't (understandable so) seem to grow so much. > As some of you may know we started on Vitalforce a herbal supplement, at first she really seemed to grow - say for 1 month - but because she has been under the weather I stopped it as I wanted all her energy to go towards feeling better than putting additional strain on her system to grow. > She's been back on the supplement for a couple of weeks now - she's still not 100% but well enough. > My questions: > Who agrees that weight gain is correlated to growth? > Can growth occur without weight gain? > Or does Sapphire's growth relate to the supplement? > All ideas and theories appreciated > Kindness always > & Sapphire > > >
Guest guest
Maeve Christian was very much like .Until he was three he had something wrong every three weeks. He was on continous [every day]antibiotics between a year and aged three because every time he was ill his temperature would rise and he would have a febrile convulsion and be admitted to hospital. But at three years old for no reason at all he stopped getting ill and honestly he is the healthiest child I have ever known. He generally gets one cold/cough and one upset stomach a year!I hope thing start to settle down with . Guest guest
We saw Colin's local Endo 4 months after his g-tube was placed and she said he could still experience a growth spurt within the next 4-6 months. So I wouldn't be discouraged if you don't see growth that quickly. After increasing from about 10-12 oz/day to currently 34 we still haven't see a big increase. He keeps growing steadily on his curve below the 5th %ile. Hopefully GH later this year will help now that his weight is up there. Guest guest
Hi Joanne thanks so much for your reply. This is so encouraging. I am always hoping will make such brilliant progress as Christian and I know I can cope with anything so long as there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Another year won't kill us! (It's just getting harder to hide the black rings under the eyes!) Thanks again and so happy for you that Christian is continuing to thrive. ps has had quite a lot of fevers this winter. At one point his temp was over 105 - really scared us. Hopefully things will settle with time. Re: Sapphire & Questions for discussion > > > > > > > I think I understand your questions... Guest guest
Dear All, Thanks to all who chipped in concerning my dilemma. All replies got me thinking but provided no more of a 'solution' Salem suggested looking at your childs activity for an increase if the child loses weight - I whole heartedly agree this is a good idea - but in Sapphire's case doesn't apply. I've picked up from the replies that no two children follow the same pattern of growth versus weight. Sapphire has always seemed to have a weight gain then follows with a height gain - which goes along with what Jen Salem wrote... But what puzzeled me is this is the first time Sapphire has had a height increase without the weight increase... Have any of you found that a height V weight pattern has been established and then changes? Our 'telephone' dietician prescribed 'Enlive' a high calorie juice 300cals in 240mls just one a night after meals. It worked well for a week that Sapphire caught a sickness thinggy so ended up back at square 1!!! But was better for the interim boost of calories. I suppose we just keep plodding along with no answers but the desire for them will never fade!!! So wipe of the vomit and snot and keep smiling ehhh??? Kindness always & Sapphire
