(or sometimes rice milk) to substitute for the dairy in the complex carb

This is interesting, since when looking back at the kiddos' infant medical

records, was thought to be have a milk protein allergy and to be

" allergic " to corn when he was hospitalized for almost a month when he was a

month old. He was put on Nutramigen and breast milk that was free of

corn/dairy products. Then, , my 19 y/o, was put on Nutramigen and then

banked breastmilk at a year old for similar problems. I honestly don't think

it was an " allergy " in the classic sense.

LOL...I'm one of those " a bit of this " and " a bit of that " cooks, depending

on what's in the house. But, this is what I start with:

I slowly heat rice milk, Rice Dream (or usually a combo of both). Then I add

raw rice, (sometimes will add different kinds of rice), brown rice syrup,

cinnamon, a bit of vanilla, and cook slowly, adding more rice milk and/or

rice dream (and maybe a bit of regular sugar or honey) until the rice is

soft/most of the liquid is absorbed. My boys like it a bit " liquidy " so I

add more " milk " as needed. It can either be eaten warm or cold. Raisins can

be added if desired, although mine don't like it that way.

Now when we have left over cooked rice (we always make a big batch in our

rice cooker), I'll just take the cooked rice, add rice milk and DariFree,

sweetener, cinnamon and vanilla and heat it at 50% power in the microwave.

That works for a quick bedtime or pre-sports snack.

This does not incorporate cornstarch, since my kiddos seem to do okay with

the combo of rice milk and darifree (full of carbs) and the rice (and very

little sweetener added, but lots of cinnamon/vanilla). If you need to add

uncooked cornstarch, you want to be sure and do it after the rice pudding is

cooled off some, so it doesn't " cook " the cornstarch.

My younger son (now 28) had to be on Nutramigen until age 2.5 and also

couldn't have gluten, citrus, milk, eggs or nuts. He had terrible digestive

problems and this worked. I have always wondered about this. He was

diagnosed with celiac disease because of the high fat content in his stool

and then years later the diagnosis was dropped. I am thinking it might have

been the mito all along.

Thanks, sounds yummy for Trevor and me!! Too much texture for Spenc

at this point, but give him about 6 months at the rate he is going...

The only sweetner in Spencer formula is Brown Rice Syrup. I have

been putting his tapioca flour in that. He slurps it right down.

May have to make me some for mornings where I am feeling sluggish.

I am confused ladies...

You say that both Nutramigen and Alimentum are dairy and corn free.

Spencer tried both was on Alimentum for months and vomiting the

entire time. He hated Nutramigen and refused. Both products have

Corn Syrup Solids as the very first ingredient. Alimentum has

hydrolized whey. They " pre-digest " the whey by adding the enzyme to

break it down to its finest element before adding it to the product.

People with milk protein allergies don't have the enzyme to break

down the milk protein.

I am personally SOOO sensitive to milk protein that I would not

tolerate the hydrolized whey at all. The Allergist suggested I try

Soy for Spenc to get away from the milk issue period. Then last

month, we bagged the corn syrup solids, too. I found a formula that

is Soy with Brown Rice Syrup. No fructose or sucrose either. He is

doing so much better since I switched.

The book sounds interesting...

What does it mean to not have " an allergy in the classic sense " ?

Will try not to get defensive here, but this is a bit of touchy

subject with me. I had a hard conversation with an Anesthesiologist

(sp?) about allergies. He insisted I didn't have any allergies bc I

didn't go into Anphalictic Shock. Finally, I told him to forget the

allergy piece. When I am exposed to preservatives in medications, I

get horrible migraine that will last for 4 days. If I avoid the

preservatives, I don't get the migraine. Therefore, it is in my best

interest to avoid the preservatives. He got it. sigh... still

insisting I didn't have an allergy but willing to avoid the

preservatives for me.

So, what do you mean by not having " an allergy in the classic sense " ?

Dena, Deb,

I really hope you don't take my previous message as too harsh. Was

not my intention. Just a passionate area for me. The allergy issue

has been my area of PCF struggle with Docs. As far as I know, they

haven't labeled me with that but I haven't read my chart either. The

Docs I work with now get it and are very helpful but it took them a

while to see what I had been telling them. They had to see how well

I improved when I avoid various foods and allergens.

I have the same problem with the preservatives. They call it a sensitivity

and not an allergy. I had to go to an allergist before Dr. Shoffner would do

my biopsy because of this. The allergist tried several versions of local

anesthesia and said to eliminate the preservatives.

I guess I jumped the gun on the Nutramigen. It was very new (28 years ago)

and it didn't have corn or milk in it at that time. It did taste bad and was

impossible to mix, so it clogged the nipples every ounce or so.

Laurie,

" ... years later the diagnosis was dropped. I am thinking it might

have been the mito all along. "

So, you are thinking he never had allergies but Mito disorder.

Interesting theory. Can he eat the gluten, citrus, milk, eggs, and

nuts now? Or did they just drop the celiac part of it?

I couldn't eat gluten or wheat for the longest time due to digestive

upset but now I can. My biggest offenders today are milk protein and

corn. There are a few others but most of the ones we thought I had I

can now tolerate on a moderate basis.

Is this what Dena meant with " I honestly don't think it was

an " allergy " in the classic sense. "

Hi Bec,

Sorry for the delay in response. It was a gorgeous day on our island today

and I actually had a platonic " date " of a late lunch/early dinner and

watching the sunset from the lighthouse bluff. It was a nice break. I think

everyone at the Dallas conference must have picked up " more than one " (grin)

bottle of that CoQ10 and must be energy laden....LOTS of posts!!!!!!! ;-)

Anyway, that's kind of what I meant. We know now that my boys all have had

severe reflux (all have had fundos and my daughter has been periodically on

GERD meds), and what the docs called " severe food allergies " in 18

years ago and " milk protein intolerance and corn allergy " in 10

years ago are probably both related to mito/metabolic dysfunction. That's

what I meant. I do believe that allergies and mito can be interrelated

however. Through the years (due to a lot of antibiotic usage for a lot of

resp. infections throughout my life), I have developed anaphylactic type

reactions to many different antibiotics. Since I have other autoimmune type

disorders (Hashimotos hypothyroid, Menieres, lichen sclerosis

atrophicus-severe, asthma), I know that " allergic " type responses run in the

family.

However, the boy's " milk protein " and 's " corn allergy " now seem to

be more due to their inability to break down the branched chain amino acids

of leucine and isoleucine.
