Guest guest
A Herxheimer is a reaction to the drug that is killing off the offending organisms releasing toxins which circulate in the body causing discomfort. . It may be encountered when you first start the drug, change the dosage or change the drug. Flares may be experienced during the course of treatment, but they will occur farther apart and with less intensity until at last you reach remission. Geoff's website use to have an illustration of this in the treatment of a gorilla taken from a published article by Dr. Brown entitled Antimycoplasma Approach to the Mechanism and the Control of Rheumatoid Disease. This gorilla was treated about 9 years before reaching remission. Whether it be a Herxheimer or a flare, the drug may be discontinued until symptoms subside, and then re-introduced slowly. However, if you are on a steroid, do not stop taking it as doing so could very well cause an exacerbation of symptoms. Ethel
