Guest guest
Holly-- Do you use a tartar control toothpaste? They have caused burning mouth syndrome also. If you are using a tartar control toothpaste ( it'll say it right on the tube--try discontinuing using it and see if your symptoms resolve. Terry Somewhat OT - Burning Mouth Syndrome When I started SCD in December, eating a banana would sometimes cause my tongue to feel a little tingly. Then in March, I ate a tiny bit of cashew butter which caused an allergic reaction, major tingly tongue being one symptom. A short while after that (a week or two), I started having problems with my tongue and the back of my mouth feeling like they've been burned. It's kind of off and on, but occurs more often after I've eaten or drank something. Initially, I thought it might be related to the water filter, because the burning seemed to happen more after drinking water or green tea. But now, the burning is becoming more frequent (it even felt burned after eating yogurt this afternoon).Upon looking around the net, I found something called Burning Mouth Syndrome that fit my symptoms pretty well. Only problem is, it's very hard to diagnose why a person has burning mouth.Has anyone else had this problem when they started eating SCD? If so, did you discover a cause? I'm really hoping that I haven't suddenly become intolerant to a bunch of foods that I was previously fine with.Oh, and I haven't added any new foods for awhile (I eat a rather monotonous diet). The only thing that has changed is that I ran out of my old Vitamin E (Nature's Valley) and started a new brand (NOW) towards the end of March, and I ran out of my Magnesium Malate (Source Naturals) and started taking Chelated Magnesium (Bluebonnet)around the beginning of April.HollyCrohn'sSCD 12/01/
Guest guest
Is your tongue white? Or have you noticed patches of white on your gums? Do you have chapped or burning lips and the skin around your mouth feels dry and chapped and rather burning too? If so, you might be dealing with a candida/yeast overgrowth. I had burning in my mouth -- along the gums and tongue and back near the roof of my mouth -- as one of my many candida-related symptoms. My tongue was coated white as well (known as thrush). What exactly are you eating? If the foods are high-carb and/or sweet, and you're taking immune-suppressant medications, or both, then you can easily have developed a yeast/candida overgrowth. It can happen even when you are eating yogurt or taking a probiotic supplement. Also, your symptoms could easily be due to the change in supplements that you mention, or something like a toothpaste or mouthwash. Consider everything you put in your mouth and swallow. I would stop all supplements for a week and see if you notice some improvement. Then you can do some experimenting to find a brand and dosage your mouth handles better. Kim M. Guest guest
Terry, my toothpaste is tartar control. It's Crest Mint & Green Tea, and the ingredients are Sorbitol , Water , Hydrated Silica , Tetrasodium Pyrophosphate , Sodium Lauryl Sulfate , Disodium Pyrophosphate , Flavor , Peppermint Oil , Anise Oil , Menthol , Green Tea Extract , Xanthan Gum , Sodium Saccharin , Carbomer 956 , Poloxamer 407 , Polyethylene , Iron Oxide , Blue 1 Aluminum Lake , Yellow 10 Aluminum Lake. Do you happen to know a brand that isn't tartar control (and that doesn't have so many nasty ingredients)? My mouth wash is Nutribiotic MouthFresh (Ingredients: Purified water, glycerine, CITRICIDAL® (grapefruit seed extract), witch hazel, aloe vera, stevia extract (natural sweetener), zinc gluconate, peppermint oil, menthol, polysorbate-20 and PEG-40 castor oil). In the past, I had great success with this mouthwash (haven't had any mouth ulcers since I started using it a couple years ago), but maybe it could be a problem for me now. Kim, my tongue and mouth look normal, and my lips don't burn. I've done the " spit test, " and it doesn't indicate I have a yeast problem. However, just to be on the safe side, I've been low carb for about 2 months (generally less than 100 grams day). I have a little honey in my yogurt, and half a cup of Welch's grape juice. There's also a little bit of carrot in my beet brownie. I've also been on Humira since July of last year. I didn't know yeast can be an issue with immunosuppresants, so I'll make sure and be extra vigilant now. I stopped the magnesium today. I'll give it a couple days, and then drop another one if nothing is better. Hopefully the culprit is a supplement or toothcare product and not a food. Speaking of food, I've been eating a lot of deviled eggs lately, more than I ever used to. I'll stop eating those for awhile too. I'm thinking about doing a rotation diet. I have enough foods now that I think I could do it fairly easy, with the exception of eating yogurt everyday. I'm still waiting for approval from my PCP to send me to an allergist. Ever since the cashew incident, I've been way to overly conscious about everything I eat (did that make my tongue feel weirder? does my throat feel strange now? am I going to keel over from eating this brownie?). It's driving me batty! I think it's driving my mom batty too, so it will be nice to get some peace of mind about what is and isn't safe for me to eat. Thanks for your help guys! I'll let you know if I find the culprit, in case it might help someone else. Holly > > Is your tongue white? Or have you noticed patches of white on your gums? Guest guest
Terry, I used to get little ulcers on my gums. It may have been crohn's related. Since I started using the GSE mouthwash a couple years ago, I quit getting them. I'll stop both the mouthwash and toothpaste though. Last night, I thought my tongue felt a little worse after using them (could have been in my head though). I'm also highly suspicious of our water filter. Tonight, I forgot to use tap water, and my tongue felt more burned afterwards. Or, it could just be that my tongue feels worse in the evening. Hopefully, one or more of these changes will help get it back to normal. Thanks for the suggestions! I'll get a new toothpaste tomorrow. Holly > > Holly, > > I would discontinue both the toothpaste and the mouthwash. Sometimes at the dollar stores or we have Job Lot here, they sell the old formulations ( original) that don't have all the fancy-pants stuff in it. > > Give it a few weeks and see if your symptoms subside. Guest guest
I had burning tongue when I would eat some foods I later found out I was allergic to (IgG - delayed allergy). My grandmother had burning tongue syndrome and hers was from a B2 deficiency. Supplementation with a B-complex vitamin helped her a lot. Guest guest
I'm hoping to see an allergist soon, so hopefully I can find out if I have a problem with certain foods. I sure hope not! My tongue is feeling quite a bit better though, so I'm experimenting with adding back the things I removed (today I added back the magnesium pill). However, I'm 80% sure of what the problem was. Our refrigerator is one of those that has a water/ice dispenser on the door. The filter needs to be changed around once every 6 months. At the time my tongue starting getting weird, the filter was about 5 months old. Since I started drinking tap water, my tongue has been getting better. Of course, I also removed some other suspicious things at the same time, so we'll see. I don't know why an old filter would cause problems though. It seems like the water wouldn't be any worse than plain ol' tap water. Guest guest
maybe mold builds up in the filter? I react hugely to molds ...right now due to spring run off, i have a flooded basement ( brings mold!) & so have had to go back to full out zero carb scd ...not even berries :-( ...it lasts about 2 months only ...thankfully! ...mold is i think one of the most common reactors! be well, gisele
