prescription iron questions

I have been following the thread on iron carefully. I am very fatigued and

my doc thinks my iron is low. He had the labs run but we don't have the

results yet. He wrote me a prescription for FeSoy iron - 325 mg per day. I

haven't gotten it filled yet for two reasons. First - I want to see what my

labs show. Second - I wanted to get ya'lls opinion of this type of iron.

What do you think? Is it the best kind for us to be taking? I am a

proximal rou-en-y.

I am also having a problem with a painful place in my incision. (Had

surgery two years ago.) It hurts when anything pulls against it. Like

just pushing on a tupperware lid hurts. Sit-ups hurt. Doc says it is not a

hernia. (Darn! Could have gotten a tummy tuck approved if it was!!) He

thinks it is either a stitch problem down in the incision or and adhesion.

Either way he says there is nothing to be done. Anyone else have this type

of problem? What, if anything did you do to help?

Blessings!

The " standard " is ferrous sulfate & that's the one docs usually know. The std

measure is 325mg. Now, from there, let's understand that is 325mg per (pair) of

pills (usually) and that is iron salts. When you flip over the package, you will

often find that it is more like 28mg elemental iron per pill. So, that said, we

need to compare apples to apples. W will use elemental iron as our measure.

And of course, ferrous SULFATE is not well absorbed by gastric bypass pts at

all. Actually, not too well by anyone!

So, Carolyn, jump in there any time to correct me, of course!

Anyway, you can check your Rx or call the pharmacist to ask what is the iron

FORM and what is the elemental iron?

Our people seem to do better on OTC carbonyl iron than we even did on Rx irons!

And for the distal or those already anemic, the polysaccharide is well absorbed

by most. I've messed around with other irons, but these are the 2 I prefer as

long as I can still get 'em. Irons are funny, every time you get a good thing

going, somebody pulls 'em off the market to they make up silly new packaging

rules. Very frustrating.

That and the measure is odd. 150mg sounds like less than 325mg, but it isn't,

since they are not the same measure.

Has your tummy hurt all along? Or is that new?

Thanks,
