Can you take a cooler with an icy and warm it up at the dr's?BelleSubject: packaging food for summerTo: BTVC-SCD Date: Tuesday, April 28, 2009, 6:59 AM

Since it is summer weather here lately..

I was wondering what do ya'll do for packaging your food that you take with you outside?

I generally try to take something like chicken soup or some kind of meat in a thermous. I am quite worried that if I take something hot it will go bad.

I go to my doctor 2 times a week and have nutritional IV's and it is important to have food while I am there. I also don't eat out so I have food on me at all times if I need a pick me up.

I need to eat protein with every meal and snack. Since the weather is changing I have to worry about my hot/warm food going bad.

How do you guys deal with this?

Thanks,

Jodi

Jodi, your hot food will keep for a long time in the thermos. Also, yogurt and

hard boiled eggs keep for hours outside the refridgerator. I don't know if you

tolerate fruit but they're fine in warm weather, also nuts.

Good luck,

GERDS and chronic C.

I've been wondering similar things. Also, do cooked veggies/fruits need refrigeration? I'm confused on what needs refrigeration and what doesn't. I'm pretty sure meat does though. Does applesauce need refrigeration? I need a high-carb food that doesn't need refrigeration or to stay hot to bring to school for when/if my blood sugar and energy suddenly drop. protein and fat don't work well for me when this happens, as I have tried just taking hard boiled eggs. After the egg I won't be hungry, but still weak, shaky and light-headed. Not good! Thanks!AlyssaUC since Sep. Alyssa,

Bananas are high carb and are good at room temperature. Very

ripe bananas are a good food for early days on the SCD.

Thanks! Also, I was wondering if you can cook different veggies, like carrots, squash, etc... and just keep portions in the freezer to reheat whenever. It seems like it would work okay, but just to make sure...AlyssaAlyssa, Bananas are high carb and are good at room temperature. Very ripe bananas are a good food for early days on the SCD. I'm always hauling around my meat and veggies, and even in winter down here (Gulf Coast) I need to keep the food chilled. I do have access to a refrigerator at work, but there is the commute time, and I'm often working away from my office.

I use the padded containers that are designed to hold a 6-pack of soda. I get the smallish blue ice or gel paks that fit into this size; they're about 3x5 inches. I find both the container and the blue ice/gel packages in the sports equipment section of Walmart, where all the coolers and camping equipment are located. Two of the ice gel packs fit into my padded container, along with 2 to 4 containers of food.

This arrangement works well unless it is summer and I'll be away from the office all day. Then I use a small cooler, and use the larger blue ice blocks. Two blue ice blocks last all day in the summer heat in my car.

I don't worry about keeping things hot -- my stomach doesn't tolerate hot food, so luke warm or room temperature is just right for me. But I would think anything in a thermos would stay hot, and if you keep the thermos in a padded container or anything insulated, the contents should stay good and hot.
