Kerrie:

I had a 10 cm fibroid (just had it removed 5 weeks ago) on the outside of my

uterus, and was diagnosed with IBS and gastrointestinal/digestive issues;

however, I am a bit older than you are (50). I had my fibroid for 10 plus

years and OB/GYN's were telling me I could get pregnant and deliver without a

problem because the fibroid was on the " outside " of my uterus--however, it

was much smaller when I was 40.

I am not a medical professional by any means (just a lay person); however, I

would be concerned about the size, weight, and/or growth rate of your

fibroid--as they are solid masses. Your fibroid could weigh up to a few

extra pounds or more. I would seek an expert MYO OB/GYN in your area and

ask about this additional weight and the effect it would have if you did in

fact get pregnant.

Kerrie,

Hi, welcome to the group - this is a great group, very supportive,

and I hope you get a lot out of it. It's definitely a tough decision

about what to do, and a very personal decision. A few others on the

board are making the same decision you are. There are also a couple

pregnant women on the board who can tell you their experiences.

You mention that the fibroid you have is on the outside of the

uterus - do you know, is it submucosal (inside the uterine wall) or

penduculated (attached to the uterus by a stalk)? Have your doctors

discussed with you the potential problems with carrying a child to

term with a largish fibroid? (Not too large, though - one Lady of the

List had a 26 cm fibroid removed recently!)

My own experience with fibroids is - I had two 6 cm fibroids of the

subserosal variety (in the uterine wall but bulging outwards) removed

in Jan. I'm still home recovering from surgery, which went very well

(according to my surgeon). I experience relief from pain, and lost

the funny feeling I had that I was carrying several golf balls (heavy

ones!) around in my abdomen. I think the fibroids were affecting me

in other ways too. I would like to try to get pregnant in the next

year or so (I'm 33, close to 34), so I can't comment yet on problems

getting pregnant, etc.

I wish you all the best,

Janet

Sheila, Am I correct in assuming that you did not get pregnant? I'm 50 now as

well and met my husband when I was 40. I didn't know that I had fibroids, just

thought that it was my age back then that prevented me from getting pregnant.

Deb:

Yes, I did not get pregnant between the ages 40 and 50. I was contemplating

it; but, many factors were not in my favor (mostly lifestyle--job related,

excessive traveling, etc.). However, I did go to Fertility Specialists and

they told me " no problem " and that everything was a " go " for getting

pregnant. They mentioned my fibroids (two) but saw little impact if

any--since both were on the " outside " of my uterus. In the last year or so,

they decided to grow--they seem to have a mind of their own. I wanted to

have them removed because my menstrual cycles were so painful (PMS, cramping,

etc.). However, my doctor also detected cysts on my ovaries (that were not

going away) and that is what prompted my Cystectomy/Myomectomy.

the best advice I can give you is to hang out here and learn everything about

your particular

condition, because it sounds like you have time and options, and that your

situation is not bleak at

the mo. Good luck and Happy Exploring. gg

Sheila, thanks for your reply. I'm getting many of you confused and can't

remember your story, so forgive me, but did you already have your myo? If so,

where did you have it done? Did you get any flack from the docs when you asked

for it AND did you ask them about the possibility of prolapse later on? THANKS!
