Guest guest
I think osteopenia/osteoporosis is common with IBD, maybe due to poor nutrient absorption or maybe because low body weight and small muscle mass don't make the bones work hard enough. I take an expensive (6-7/day) supplement by Pure Encapsulations called " +CAL+ " which contains calcium, magnesium (not enough), zinc, trace minerals, and Vitamins C, D and K; and for extra magnesium I use NOW brand Magnesium Malate (AKA malic acid) that I buy from Vitaglo.com. And a super multi-vitamin/mineral supplement from Stop Aging Now. My bone density increased over the last 3 years, without taking the Fosamax my MD prescribed, but it may also be because I restarted HRT in the form of bio-identical estrogen/progesterone. Best wishes for a successful surgery and quick and easy recovery! Good reading that Al Haboker! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osteopenia In my case it's due to malabsorption, Steroid use and Thyroid issues. Guest guest
Hey Jodi, I recently had a DEXA scan as well and found that I have osteopenia in my hip and my lower spine. I had started taking the Freeda SCD Calcium supplement just prior to the scan and am now continuing to take it along with the Freeda SCD multi. I did a little research on what other supplements to take because my doctor prescribed me Fosamax which I did not want to take. I found this website that had some good info: http://www.womentowomen.com/bonehealth/20keybonenutrients.aspx HTH! peace, Geoff crohn's/colitis 8/99 SCD 13 months > > So my DEXA scan results show that I do have Osteopenia in a couple of places. > My doc said that it is very much in levels that I can still work with it. Guest guest
In addition to the mineral supplements, you might want to take a look at this video about building bone mass through exercise. Guest guest
Hi Geoff, My integrative doc gave me a list (about 3 things) she would want me to take for the Osteopenia. I didn't look into it too much because we are going to approach this subject after my Surgery in June as perhaps I do not tolerate meds and supplements due to my strictures (compounded liquids seems to be fine but are very pricey. Transdermal creams seems to be ok too but are also very expensive) She gave me a name of a supplement that starts with an S (and works on a different level that Fosomax works on) she also uses Vitamin K and D. I cannot take Calcium it makes me really sick. Have your values changed at all? Jodi
Guest guest
Hi , I would love to get into a routine of doing gentle Yoga and Tai-Chi. When I can work out like this I know I will of achieved a huge milestone in health. I hope this happens with time after my surgery in June. Guest guest
Thanks for the well wishes Debbie T! Have you also been on a lot of steroids over the years? I think the combo of steroids, Crohn's, Thyroid problems, Severe Menstural issues all were a recipe for disaster for my bone health. Guest guest
Hi Jody, Check out this post from n awhile back: http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/BTVC-SCD/message/16912 She mentions a study that found CLA helpful in rebuilding bone mass. It's something I'm going to look into taking, since I have osteopenia too. I used to take Fosamax and Actonel, but quit in the last year. Too many ugly stories about them ruining your bones rather than helping them. Good luck with your surgery! You're going to come out on the other side better than ever . Guest guest
Please be careful and read carefully about CLA supplements and it's side effects on the liver. CLA from grass-fed beef and butter from grass-fed cows is a natural, safe way. The study is experimental from what I read and should be approached with caution. I wouldn't get too excited about it yet. Guest guest
The key is to use mixed-isomer CLA, which doesn’t adversely affect the liver. Experimental? More studies can always be done, on just about anything. But I wouldn’t call what Dr. Park, et al, are doing experimental, any more than most studies are. n From: BTVC-SCD [mailto:BTVC-SCD ] On Behalf Of Terry Rumas Sent: Saturday, April 25, 2009 11:27 PM To: BTVC-SCD Subject: Re: Re: OT- Osteopenia Please be careful and read carefully about CLA supplements and it's side effects on the liver. Guest guest
ONE study does not make anything safe. Having been a pharmacist in my previous life, the rule of thumb among us was you didn't recommend a new drug that was on the market less than five years to a family member. The real story emerges within the 5 year mark. All studies are experimental. All I said, and I stand by it, is to read carefully about CLA and it's effect on the liver. Where is the proof that mixed isomer CLA doesn't adversely affect the liver? I certainly wouldn't take it based on ONE study. Everyone can make their own decision about their body....just need to do all the research and make an informed decision. As I said, I wouldn't get too excited about it.....YET. When there are 10 studies reproducing the same results, then I'll get excited about it. Guest guest
On a related note, here's an interesting article in the New York Times regarding how increased serotonin in the gut builds bone. Kind of interesting in how the gut and bone are related. --
Guest guest
If one has, say, osteoporosis, and has to choose between the drugs normally used for that condition (which have quite nasty side-effects, and which don’t actually build new bone) and taking CLA with calcium, I at least, will take CLA. No contest. That’s my “informed decision.” If some other woman wants to subject herself to those drugs, obviously she’s welcome to. That’s simply not the choice I’ve made. n From: BTVC-SCD [mailto:BTVC-SCD ] On Behalf Of Terry Rumas Sent: Tuesday, April 28, 2009 10:18 PM To: BTVC-SCD Subject: Re: Re: OT- Osteopenia ONE study does not make anything safe.
