Guest guest
Hi Jill, I have never had that experience. I do on occasion get a mild flank pain, but I have never found any lumps. I would definitely check it out with your doctor Jill. Guest guest
I've never heard of this either. Pierre Re: lump in back????? > > Hi Jill, > > I have never had that experience. Guest guest
Hi Deb, The debate continues :-) There are many Nephs who feel that because the kidneys are not nerve rich organs that there can be no pain in the kidneys. On the other hand, the number of IgAN patients who experience the flank pain in their lower back around the kidneys would lead me to believe there must be some connection. Some of our members experience very severe flank pain, and other like me only an occasional very mild discomfort. Lower back pain is common in the general public too though, so who knows. Personally I think there must be a cause and effect, but it has not been widely accepted by all Nephrologists. Guest guest
Lots of people experience " flank pain " . Your neph is right. There are simply no pain nerves in the part of the kidneys that is affected by IgAN. You can't argue with physiology. So, you can't feel IgAN in your kidneys. Why people have flank pain exactly is a bit of a mystery, but it's thought that it perhaps is caused by swelling or stretching of the " renal capsule " , which is sort of the envelope around the kidneys, and perhaps some tenderness of the muscle layer in that area. Of course, there could be other reasons for pain from the kidney area, like stones, infection, obstruction in the urinary tract of some kind, etc. Unfortunately, there's not too much anyone can do about the typical dull flank pain that people with kidney disease have now and then. Some people report that drinking or not drinking certain things seems to help. There is also more severe pain. It's so severe that it has been given a name of its own: loin pain hematuria syndrome. Nobody really knows why it happens though, and it can apparently be related to various different kidney diseases. I've never had this, but we're talking about very severe, almost unbearable pain here, not just the typical dull flank pain. Guest guest
Thanks , As long as it doesn't get too severe, I won't worry about it. The whole debate takes me back to when my kids were little and the pediatrician swore there was no connection between teething and diaper rash. (The nurses all agreed with us that the majority of the moms said that it happened). Thanks again for the info - it's nice to know that I'm not crazy or alone. Guest guest
Hi All For those of you who have the flank pain like myself, you can tell you doctors it is very real even though not everyone with IgAN experiences it. I too can get a lump on my back right over the kidney area and doctor can only think that it is the muscle being pushed about due to the swelling and stretching that Pierre mentions. I have yet talked to a doctor in my area that has heard of Loin Pain Hematura Syndrom - yet I take daily narcotics to deal with my chronic flank pain. just my 2 cents to add thanks > Lots of people experience " flank pain " .
