If your wife is not having any symptoms, my opinion is don't rush into

anything. By all means, get a 2nd or even 3rd opinion. There are a lot of

women here who have this size fibroid and some bigger. Read and research and

make the right decision for your wife. Even if she begins to have some

symptoms, don't let any dr. talk you into doing any procedure you don't want

to have done.

Let us know how it goes for you. Sorry I'm not in Indiana.

How nice that you are questioning this for your wife!

She may not need a hyst at all...it depends.

Hang out here and you will get the tools you need to make a decision you are ok

Where are you in IN? I'm here too. You have LOTS of options. You also got time

to decide. Where is the fibroid? In the uterus? Outside the uterus? In the wall?

Did they tell you what kind it is? I was told the same thing as your wife. I

knew better because of this group. This is a great group. I'm in southern IN. I

got an RE in Louisville. There are REs in Indianapolis. REs usually have better

surgical skills than regular GYNs.

What part of Indiana? After listening to Kukalaka's horror stories of

the medical conditions in Indiana (ville, I think), I would be

looking out of state if I were you. Hang in there and don't let the

docs do a hyst.

Thank you very much. You are right. This is a big decision and we have to make

it carefully. I have set up 5 appointments with different doctors for my wife. I

think since we don't know which one is good, we have to see more doctors and

pick one who is best to us based on our own judgment.

May be the doctor is right. He wants to do the surgery as soon as possible,

because two years ago my wife had an ultrasound examination. The result was

normal. He thinks the fibroid is growing to fast.

Has anyone contacted www.fibroid.com recently? I try to call their office; the

phone number is disconnected. I send them an email, it was returned. I try to

get a referral from this center. If anyone has the number, please let me know.

I just found out that i have a submucous fibroid near my cervix and my doc

says it's an inch long. I guess that's 3 cm? He has referred my to a doc who

he highly recommends. I have had great referrals from this doc. so I trust

his judgement. He says he would recommend a resection and an ablation. I

agree. But, there have been moments that I wanted to say hysto. He told me

that was an option. But he would a couple times mention it almost like a

side bar. I don't think he wanted me to chose that. Anyway I have an appt.

on Apr. 2nd. I realize that is now less than 2 weeks away. But this whole

process takes so damn long. Of course after the consult then there is the

scheduling. I hope it's not too long. I had a Lupron shot on the 14th.

It's supposed to work for a month. I had excessive bleeding and spent the

night at the hospital. I am also anemic. Glad to hear the resection was a

piece of cake. I am not really worried about it. And am looking forward to

the ablation.

Dear Jun,

Ask your doctor to explain to you what rapid growth of your wife's fibroid

means. Does it mean he thinks it might be cancer? Then, she should have a

biopsy to rule it in or out. Does it mean that he thinks it will grow and

impede other organs? If so, based on the rate of growth, exactly when will

this be a problem? Does he think this will make pregnacy impossible or

difficult? Ask him to explain exactly how. Take notes. Go see other

doctors and ask them the same questions.

Unless you have a life-threatening condition, there is no reason for a

doctor to pressure your wife for surgery. I would take that as a sign that

your doctor has his wallet at heart more than your wife's health. If your

wife has no symptoms, there is no reason to hurry.

Good luck and keep asking questions. If you feel pressured, slow down,

breathe, and take your time. It is always a bad idea to make a very

important decision under pressure. Only sign up for elective surgery when

you are absolutely sure you have done your homework and you have chosen the

best surgeon and the best procedure for you.

We live in Carmel Indiana, just outside of Indianapolis. Right now the only

thing I know is that the fibroid is inside the uterus. I will try to get a copy

of ultrasound report today.

Can you tell me what is RE and how can we contact them?

Just because the fibroid has started to grow more (and 2 years is a

realtively long time) doesn't necessarily mean anything. The doctor

is probably trying to play the cancer card, but you should know that

cancerous tumors are very rare (I am sure some one else has the

precentages) and fibroids do not " turn into " cancer. I found a

doctor who was open to other options by contacting the hospital in my

state that does a lot of UAEs and asking them for the names of

doctors in my area that have referred for that procedure (feeling

that they would be more open minded). It turned out that UAE was not

necessary for me since the fibroid causing me bleeding problems was

entirely inside the uterine cavity and easily removed (by a qualified

doctor) by hysteroscopic resection, an outpatient procedure also

known as vaginal myomectomy, done with no incisions. Naturally

(since I am an elderly 45 year old) the first doctor I saw suggested

a hyst, and said that if the fibroid didn't get too big he could do

it vaginally. Of course when a vaginal hyst is performed the cervix

always comes out too and sometimes the vagina is shortened as a

result. So I found a doctor who wanted to do what is best for ME,

not her pocketbook, and I have all my parts AND a satisfying sex life.

(Reproductive Endocrinologists) in Louisville for myself.

If your wife's fibroid is inside her uterus, sometimes they can do a resection.

This is an outpatient procedure. Your wife would have no outside cuts. I was

told ultrasound doesn't give a good enough picture of a fibroid. I will be going

back to Louisville to have a saline sonogram to get a better picture of my

fobroid (which they think is inside my uterus). So it seems to me your wife

would need a saline sono, CAT or MRI. Something more than just an ultrasound.

Sometives fibroids grow fast. It's very rare for a fibroid to be cancer. Less

than 1%. Your wife sould be a candidate for myomectomy or UAE.

REs have taken out a lot of fibroids in this group. Maybe this doc that your

wife saw is only trained in hysts like the docs here. You have pleanty of time.

If your wife bleeds heavily, check for anemia.

It sounds like your doctor is giving you good advice. I had a

resection last year and my bleeding has improved dramatically. Not

only that but the extreme bloating I used to experience before and

during my period has now gone. I also have a friend who had a

resection done and is very glad she did. You are lucky to have a

doctor looking out for your best interests.

Hi,

I got a copy of my wife~{!/~}s ultrasound result. The mass lesion is 9.8

x 10.2cm and there is a broad area of contact between the body of

the uterus and the mass lesion. The left ovary is also contiguous

with lesion, and the left ovary appears to be displaced rather than

be the origin of the mass lesion.

We went to see our second OBGY doctor (Dr. Star) this morning. After

examination he found that the tumor is like a baby head, it almost

came out of the cervix. The cervix already opened about 4cm. He is

very surprised my wife doesn~{!/~}t have any symptom. This is the first

time he has ever seen. He thinks that he can remove the tumor just

like deliver a baby. But after he did another ultrasound. He thinks

it is too risky. It will cost a lot of bleeding and may be need do a

hysterectomy if the bleeding can~{!/~}t control. Based on current

examinations and ultrasounds, he thinks it is most likely a fibroid.

But since it growth so fast, it could be another kind tumor (I can~{!/~}t

remember the name, it is between benign and cancer) or change to

cancer in the future. Here is what he said about treatment options.

First the tumor has to be removed quickly. The tumor could come out

of cervix and pull the uterus out.

Hi,

Your quite welcome for the information.

If a skilled surgeon does a myomectomy, there should be only a minimal loss of

blood. You still may want to see a RE. They do seem do to a lot more

myomectomies. Your wife will need something better than a regular ultrasound to

really know about her tumor. Once a tumor is removed, that tumor doesn't come

back. You can get a new tumor. But the fewer tumors you have, the less likely

you will get a new tumor. If this is indeed a fibroid, very slim chance of

cancer. If you are even remotly considering another child. DO go and see a RE.

They will possibly be able to treat your wife and give you the option of another

child. You may really want to consider a abdominal myomectomy. Talk to REs. It

can't hurt.

Read www.myomectomy.net, it will tell you about blood loss during surgery,

recurrance, cancer risks, a lot of info there.

I am in Indianapolis....had UAE at Methodist Hospital. Specialist in IR has

done over 200 with very good results..I have had very good results 1 month post.

Jun, OB/GYN docs make money doing hysterectomys. Methodist Hospital in Indy

does UAE in Interventional Radiology..well over 200 times. The doc is a female.

I made an appointment for my wife with IU medical center Tuesday.

They have done lots of UAE. They will do some initial check to see

, Pain was controlled well..I had proceedure on Thurs and returned to work

the following Wed....did well.

That's so good to know. I have enough sick time to do that. I was worried

about pain control. I have pain due to the cramping at this point. I am

waiting for an appointment with a radiologist April 3. It seemed like a long

time to wait today. I had a great deal of cramping and had to call the

doctor. They gave me a prescription for Tylenol #3. It's woking, but I can't

take it at work. Hope I won't have to tomorrow!
