First of all you will probably need to supplement with vitamin D, and also calcium. But do not use any calcium, use chelated or coral calcium for the best absorbtion. Also I have been using NATURAL progesterone cream for years to help with PMS and for being cold all the time, but it is also a great thing to actually help build bone. So it has been used safely and effectively for treating osteoporosis. Make sure it is natural and have 450mg of progesterone in it. You can get it in any health food stores. Those are just some suggestions that I have used and know work. > I am totally new to this subject and I must get a DEXA scan. > It seems I have significant bone loss (I actually shrank in size. Guest guest
You could take CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) along with calcium. (The CLA should be identified on its bottle as the mixed isomer type, which prevents any liver problems.) I posted about this a few weeks ago when you were away, Jodi. A very recent study re: CLA shows that when taken along with calcium (calcium citrate is the best kind) it increases bone density. I read about that in a news story and contacted one of the researchers, who gave me dosing and other information. (Up to 6 grams a day shouldn’t cause any problem.) I suspect a lot of doctors don’t know about this (yet). And I don’t know how fast one’s bones build up. But the results were measurable. When I was told I have osteoporosis last year I refused the traditional “bone builders” and decided to just exercise as much as my fatigue allowed and continue to take calcium and Vit. D. Then I read about the CLA working with calcium and began taking that in mid-January. n From: BTVC-SCD [mailto:BTVC-SCD ] On Behalf Of jodah235 Sent: Tuesday, March 17, 2009 6:59 PM To: BTVC-SCD Subject: OT- Natural approaches to bone loss I am totally new to this subject and I must get a DEXA scan. I have had years and years of malabsorption and Steroid use, so it's no wonder. Also, I feel many of my health issues are in direct consequence to using big pharma meds for 12 years and I will probably deal with side effects as opposed to the disease and illness itself. This is a super important vitamin that is potentially not well absorbed in pill/ supplement form by people with disegtive disorders. I just read an article about a man who has crohn's who had major health benefits from getting his vitamin D from UV exposure- tanning beds or outdoors. Did you ever have a 25 hydroxy vitamin D test? I tan once every 7 to 10 days indoors, my vitamin D was fine when I got my blood checked. I have crohn's and I was deficient in other vitamins because I do have malabsorption issues. Vitamin D is readily produced when our skin is exposued to UVB.
Guest guest
Hi Jodi, I've lost 1 inch in height in the past 10 years and also was on steroids for many years. I thought the same thing, osteoporosis. I had a DEXA and my bone density was fine. The problem is curvature of the spine, caused by muscles tensing and pulling the spine out of whack into a scoliosis pattern. I believe if I could find a good physical therapist I could reverse it, so far, no luck. Have the DEXA and then worry about osteoporosis. A natural cure for that would be weight bearing exercises and vitamin D. When they give you the scan back they include a regime to follow if you have it. I learned from listening to one alternative medical doctor that arthritis (which I have) and osteoporosis are opposite diseases. Arthritis calls for less weight bearing on the bones, losing weight and not lifting, while osteoporosis calls for lifting weights or walking with a heavy backpack to build up the density of the bones. There is a medication for it, but like you said, it comes with a long term price. Let us know what the DEXA says. Guest guest
Jodi, You might NOT have significant bone loss, although then again, you might because of all the steroids. However, why not see what the test says before you panic? My mom was sure she had osteoporosis because the cartilage in her knees has disintegrated. (Steroids to prevent rejection of a replaced cornea.) Scan came back... she has the density of a 60 year old, which, at 86, is doing darn good. If you're determined to start research, start with Vitamin D; calcium, magnesium, and zinc containing foods (you're doing dairy-free right now, aren't you?); and conjugated linolenic acid (CLA) which is more common in pastured foods. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund

Well, I had my heel scanned in 2000 and 2001 which showed bone loss there. My doc said with my D levels I really need a Dexa as she is concerned if a foot scan (which she doesn't like) already showed bone loss. I shrank a whole inch and a half. How disheartening!! Anyway, Yes, I will do this test in the next few weeks too and not get too ahead of myself. > If you're determined to start research, start > with Vitamin D; calcium, magnesium, and zinc > containing foods (you're doing dairy-free right > now, aren't you?); and conjugated linolenic acid > (CLA) which is more common in pastured foods. I am planning on re-introing yogurt soon. Just not sure if I should try non fat first (better for Pancreas issues no fat) or low fat first (better for gut but has more fat which is worse for Pancreas) Pancreas is more troubling than gut right now. How soon we forget. <g> Mara
