My only solution for this is one roundly condemmed by all here and the nephs

themselves:

eat less.

On mornings following approximate fasting days (note, this doesn't include

avoiding things like kool-aide or other sugary drinks, so I am getting some

calories + the neph vitamins) I have no nausea.

On days when I eat relatively little and very carefully, the next morning =

some nausea

On days (like last night) when I overindulged and ate a smallish

steak....whoopsie daisy.

None of the standard antinausea anythings do anything for me at all, so I

don't have further (uniformly bad) advice other than this.

cheers, Bart

I hated the (as my son calls it) " pukey " feeling that I sometimes had. I

tried Nexium, but found that Prilosec worked better for me. Don't know why -

they are fairly similar drugs. That's just me - your mileage may vary.

Re: Early am nausea...any tips?

Hi Amy,

Sorry about your nausea - that is an awful thing - I dare say when I feel

that way I would rather vomit (excuse my language) than keep that nausea

feeling. I know when I was going through it...I actually had to force myself

to eat something in the morning - I didn't feel like it but it was the only

way I could get my meds down when feeling nauseas. As soon as I ate, I the

nausea would go away. I just ate simple things like a slice of toast with a

little jam on it.

I'm very happy to see your BP has come down and is running steady ;-) Hugs,

Rita

Anyone have any tips for battling early morning nausea? I'm on Nexium which

has worked well for my nausea over the past few months but once again I'm

finding myself being woken up with a very sour stomach. I can now feel

empathy for women who have morning sickness...something I was spared from

having during my two pregnancies. (karma catching up with me I guess)

I make sure to eat a little something before bed but I'm still waking up

feeling like I shouldn't move lest I vomit. Any ideas to help it subside? I

am doing another 24 hr urine and bloodwork this Saturday. My neph spot

checked my serum creatinine a few weeks ago and it was still holding stable

so I'm hoping that means things are still o.k. on the kidney front. My b/p

has been on a slow steady march upwards too....so far the increase in the

lisinopril has been keeping it down in the 110/80 range again.

LOL! I hear ya Bart. I think I felt my best the few weeks I was on a pure

liquid diet after having my tonsils out. My neph frowns on such eating habits

though... I switched the time I take my Nexium and so far I'm not as horridly

queasy in the morning but it's only been a few days. I'll give it a few weeks

and see if it's still helping then...once the psychological effect wears off.

I can relate to you too, Amy. I started experiencing the same problem

you've been talking about 1.5 years ago - they had me eat radioactive

eggs for one of the tests. The poor tech was trying to make me hurry

up and eat and I was just so nauseated that my spoonfuls were getting

smaller and smaller. :)

I'm on Aciphex for it, similar to Prilosec and it works okay. I take

it in the morning so it doesn't help much with the early am nausea,

but it does for the rest of the day. It even brought my appetite back

for a bit. I start my day in front of the computer with a cup of tea

and my meds. Usually by the time I've caught up on my email the

aciphex has kicked in - so that's my tip. Put something bland in your

tummy until the Nexium kicks in and you can eat and take the rest of

your meds.

From what I understand as kidney function declines many patients have

problems with nausea, I just wish someone could wave a magic wand and

stop it in it's tracks - or at least warn us that it might happen! :)

Nothing quite like laying there in bed in the morning with your tummy

all queazy, your face all green and your husband looking at you in a

lascivious manner... He still hasn't given up hope! ;)

It stands to reason that if you have nausea because you have advanced renal

failure, your going to feel much better not eating, for a while, simply

because you're going to be less uremic. Nausea IS a uremic symptom in this

case. This is how a properly-done low protein renal diet works in helping a

person feel better until it's time to start dialysis. Less protein, less

uremia. But, not eating is the wrong strategy in the long run though,

because malnutrition (which can happen easily in CRI and ESRD patients) will

set in and it is DEFINITELY a high risk factor for mortality and morbidity

when starting and continuing on dialysis. Moreover, it can mask the fact

that it's time to actually start dialysis when it should be started.

I hear that Pierre, getting close to malnutrition on a renal vegetarian diet

is the reason meat had to be added back in for me. I was getting the protein

but not in highly usable forms. Its also the reason I do my best to eat,

something, anything even if it's a glass of soy milk and fruit or some low

sodium jerky on those days I feel horrid. I also found that oatmeal sits well

on a icky feeling stomach.

Thankfully I don't have many days where I'm queasy all day long, it's mainly

from the time I wake up until about noon or so....by lunch I'm normally doing

well enough to eat without too much difficulty. It's also nice having a husband

who cooks...on my really lousy days he prepares the meal so I don't have to deal

with that plus trying to eat it afterward.
