Guest guest
You missed a chance to educate the guy, Carol. I would've said " why should I eat a potato or oatmeal when that makes my BG go way up? " And listened carefully to his answer then respond. (I would've liked to know what he said too). The bunk about carbs being necessary for energy is just that - bunk. (I even have something somewhere in my archives about that.) I saw a dietitian this week for the first time since diagnosis, and she kept looking for ways for me to add carbs to my life, telling me that eating carbs would stabilize my BG. Yeah right. I was well behaved and didn't call her a dimwit even as she tried to convince me that having ham and cheese rollups for lunch, with a bit of mustard and some raw veggies, wasn't a good idea, and that adding a low fat, low calorie carb item, such as bread, instead of the cheese, would be better. Not white bread, but a grainy bread. Better for what? I do occasionally have bread - the low carb kind that's also high in fiber - but not often. I did surprise her with my detailed food records, written neatly with BG results and exercise as well. She tried to convince me that diabetics should focus only on cardio exercise as that's what would have the greatest effect on BG and weight loss. In the short term, yes, but in the long term, muscle building exercise will work to lower overall BG as the more muscle one has, the less insulin resistant on tends to be. Plus, more muscle means less fat, if that is one's goal as well, but, as I said, I was well behaved and said, ok, and I see a lot. The only reason I went to this appointment is that I want an insulin pump so I " m following all the instructions from the endo's office so they'll think I'm very compliant and willing to follow instructions. I'll end up doing what I want to do after I get what I need from them. Oddly, since 12/1, when I first went to the endo's office, I've eaten a few more carbs as if to say, here's what they do to my BG. Guest guest
Well, that was fun. I went out and bought Quaker Oats, made it up, ate it and guess what? From a pre meal number of 7.2 it went up to 17.7 in 2 hours! Eyes aching and then I fell asleep. Now I have a headache. Anyone want an almost new box of Quaker Oats? I'm going back to my original way of thinking. I'm doing fine without the extra carbs. I might try some boiled new potatoes with a meal but that's it. I should have known better. My body is weird. It was very happy on the cabbage soup diet (without the soup) in fact when I had to go off it for the 2 days I knew that it missed it. This was prediabetes of course. I can't wait until April now to tell him to take his carbs and well, you can guess the rest. ===== Carol Type 2 Dx: 19 May 2004 Metformin 500mg x 3 Perindopril ___________________________________________________________ ALL-NEW Yahoo! Guest guest
I fervently wish some of those docs and dietitians were diabetic and ate the high-carb diet they insist is the correct way for diabetics to eat. D'you think then they'd realize the error of their ways?? Vicki Re: Re:dietican > > You are NOT weird--MOST diabetic react badly with spiking bg's to > grains > & higher carb foods.
