Guest guest
Margaret, I too suffer from eye inflammation. First, a phone consult sounds silly as you should be examined by an ophthalmologist to rule out a bacterial or viral infection. Second, there are steroid eye drops that can clear it up without going through the gut. At times, I have used stronger steroid drops. For maintenance, I use Alrex two times a day . Lesa IBS SCD since 9/07 ulcerative colitis and eye inflammation Hi everyone. I currently have no gut symptoms but my eyes are inflammed (red, watery and painful). My doctor consulted with an opthamologist and she recommended that I take 3-4 motrin 3X a day to clear it up. My doctor said even though motrin is known to cause inflation in the gut, I should take it to clear up my eyes. Does this sound consistent with what others have experienced? It seems totally counter intuitive to me. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Save money by eating out! Find great dining coupons in your area. Guest guest
I know how you feel, the same thing happened to me last year I developed scelritis in my eye and was on pred for 7 months could not take any other anti inflammatory since it really messed up my gut.It falls under an auto immune disease problem and goes hand in hand with the UC even if its quite it still an auto immune thing I am since off the pred but on an auto immune supressant......that brings different problems but better than losing your eye sight. Guest guest
No. I have eye dryness/inflammation problems. My ophthalmologist has prescribed with eye drops; there are various to chose from, some of contains have mild steroids, which control the inflammation and let the eyes heals. There’s no discernable systemic effect from the steroids in the drops. No doctor should prescribe something for you that he/she knows is going to inflame your gut. n From: BTVC-SCD [mailto:BTVC-SCD ] On Behalf Of margaretrobbins@... Guest guest
Yes you are right but the pred was all I could tolerate....the motrin / aleve I could not tolerate made me bleed. Good Luck with the dryness/inflammation either way its uncomfortable. Suzanne ulcerative colitis and eye inflammation> > > > > > > > > Hi everyone. It seems totally counter intuitive to me. I understand what they're trying to do. Motrin is an anti-inflammatory and pain reliever, and it should help inflammation in the eyes. HOWEVER: The " inactive " ingredient in Motrin is bleeping b'd@maned LACTOSE!! My surgeon put me on it last year, intending to get me off the opiates. Gave me the most horrible pain, gas, and diarrhea I've had since before I started SCD! Just TRY scrambling out of bed and running to the loo with a 24 " slice across your gut! Find an ophthamologist who understands about something that won't make you sicker... your eyes need to be treated, but for ghu's sake, they need to take into account the rest of you! — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund
Guest guest
Instead of Motrin we now use ginger root. It helps with inflammation and does not hurt your stomach. If you leave some of the peel on it actually helps the stomach. I cut an inch or so off the root and peel. Cut that into small slices. Microwave in a cup of water until it boils. Let it sit a minute. I drink it with green tea and lemon. My daughter drinks it with lemon and honey...she likes it very sweet. It's the only "meds" my daughter has taken in 10 months. She's 9 and has Crohn's. Her eyes used to bother her quite a bit. That was one of the symptoms that slowly disappeared as she was on the diet fanatically. Guest guest
I had iritis (inflammation of the iris) in 1979 about 9 months before my first UC attack -- mostly very blurred vision -- and the steroid drops helped that a lot. Now I have chronic blepharitis (inflammation of the eyelids) with red and burning eyelids most of the time. The ophthalmologist gave me some OCuSOFT eyelid cleanser to try and also suggested heating a slice of potato (not SCD, but surely OK for our eyes!) in the microwave and applying it to the eyelids for several minutes -- I haven't tried either one yet, but they might be helpful. Guest guest
Hi Debbie: My sister has chronic blepharitis. What really helps her is washing the top and bottom of inside her eyes with a 1 part (baby shampoo) to 5 parts water. Before doing this she puts a warm cloth on her eyes for about 5 minutes. Apparently this will prevent the blepharitis from getting worse. If you need all the details, let me know, I'll get them from her.
