Guest guest
Hi From time to time, people on this list ask questions about depression and how to treat it. I would like to share something with you because although I do believe in depression, and do believe that some people on this list need proper treatment for it, maybe we are sometimes too quick to assume. A few years ago, I was treated for depression. My doctor said that with the task of caring for my wife, I wouldn't be human if I didn't get depressed at times. I was treated with Luvox (Prozac) and it seemed to work and after several months of treatment, I was weaned off the drug. A few months ago, the same doctor told me that I was suffering from depression yet again and prescribed Luvox for me again. I was having coffee with Sarie Lowden (some of you may remember Sarie, her husband died from MSA last December) and I was telling her about this. She said to me that she didn't believe I was depressed. " You are sad " , she said, " and why wouldn't you be " . I thought about what she said, and I realised that she was right. Of course I was sad. I was caring full time for my wife of over 30 years, watching her slowly deteriorate, enduring what one person described as a long farewell. I quit the medication, properly, and bought some relaxation tapes. Everynight I played a tape when I went to bed. Within a few days, I started to get to sleep more quickly and started to sleep better. Within a few weeks, I was much more relaxed, certainly in better shape than before. So what I am saying is that maybe some people might be suffering from feeling sad rather than depressed. I trust this helps.
