Hi Celeste,

I had a myomectomy on 11/19/02. I had a fibroid that

was somewhere in the range of 11-14 cm. My doctor

said my uterus was like a 16-20 week pregnancy. I had

no symptoms except I felt like my stomach stuck out.

My periods were normal and I didn't have any

discomfort or extended bleeding.

I am 35 recently married and want to have children. I

went to a RE/Infertility Specialist and he suggested

that I have the large fibroid removed to prevent

complications during a pregnancy. I was scared of

everything including a hysterectomy but he practically

did everything but guarantee in writing that it

wouldn't turn into that. He said only 1 time in the

thousands of myos he has done, did it ever turn into a

hyst.

My fibroid was in an easy place - hanging off the top

of my uterus so it was easy to remove.

He did not use Lupron. Everything was successful.

Good Luck with your decision and please let me know if

you have any questions.

Lori,

If you were not going to have a child would you avoid surgery for now as you

are asymptomatic?

Your situation sounds somewhat similar to me (no symptoms, just protruding

stomach). You need a more experienced doctor if she is admitting that she

doesn't feel confident performing a myo. There are doctors available that

can remove any number/size of fibroids safely without lupron first. It's all

depends on the skill of the surgeon.

good luck

If you would have asked me that question before the

surgery I would probably have told you that I would

have put the surgery off for a while longer - as long

as I could (even though I hated how my stomach stuck

out). I was more terrified of surgery. I was really,

really scared - more than the average person.

But..... after having the surgery and seeing that it

really wasn't bad at all (at least for me) - I am glad

that I got rid of that big fibroid. I healed well and

was not ever in excrutiating(sp?) pain. It just

didn't belong in my body.

Celeste,

I'm 36, wanting to get pregnant. My largest (of 4 fibroids) was 10

cm. My main symptom was swollen abdomen. I opted for a myo. I'm 2

weeks post. You can read my earlier posts. I din not have to take

I would stress to your doc, and/or get a second opinion that they

ensure they will not have to do a hyst as a back-up. My Gyno knew

very clearly I want to get pregnant, so she never mentioned it to me

as a possible situaiton during surgery. I lost very little blood,

even though my surgery lasted 3 hours. My largest fibroid was on and

in the rear wall of my uterus.

Good luck with your decision.

Hi Celeste,

I am 7 weeks past a successful myo. My uterus was 20-22 weeks size and the

fibroid removed was 26cm. My only symptoms were also a large abdomen and

frequent urination. I did take Lupron for 4 months prior to surgery on my

doctor's recommendation (because my fibroid was huge, although he was willing to

do the surgery without the Lupron if I didn't want to take it). I didn't have

any side effects other than some hot flashes and actually felt better on Lupron

than I had before taking it.

Has your doctor told you how many fibroids you have, how big they are and where

they are located? It would be easier for you to research and compare your

situation to others here if you knew. Myos can be bloody, but no so that a

skilled surgeon can't handle it. I had my myo done by a Reproductive

Endocrinologist who has performed hundreds of myos. He doesn't consider it a

risky or particularly difficult surgery. Quite honestly, your doctor doesn't

sound very skilled in myos. She sounds like she is trying to scare you or

prepare you for the worst in case she can't handle the myo. At least she is

going to have a fertility specialist assist, but I wonder why she doesn't refer

you to someone skilled enough to perform the myo rather than just assist her.

Since you don't have any symptoms, it seems like you can take your time and

maybe research other physicians.
