Guest guest
I need help folks. I have sleep apnea and last night I had my sleep test with the actual cpap machine. What a nightmare (pun intended). After setting myself up and having my family point and laugh (no really they were pretty good) I laid myself down and read then off to sleep. What a hellish night of sleep it was. All I could do was hear that machine (which sounds like me breathing heavily. I tossed and turned and this morning when I woke up at 6 am (not that I hadn't been laying awake for 1/2 hour at least wishing the alarm would go off) and took everything off my face around my nose, where the mask is, burned like a sunburn. I have had 3 bloody noses this morning and I am exhausted. I don't want to do this. I don't want the apparatis they are going to presecribe to me. I am sure the nosebleeds will stop but the burning is still there and it is nearly 3 hours later, but it is fading. My face was all puffy this morning and after an hour the marks on my face from the straps and mask were finally gone. Has anyone had any of these things happen before? Do I have to take the machine that is prescribed or can I just continue to live with my sleep apnea? Am I being a fool and a big baby? Sorry to rant and rave and stomp my feet but I am just very frustrated and I guess pretty tired.
Guest guest
Hi , I've used a CPAP machine for 5 years now. I have learned a LOT about sleep apnea and such machines, and for me the two most important things were: 1. Get a comfortable mask and headgear 2. Use a heated humidifier with the machine I use a gel-filled mask (in my case, it's the Profile Lite, although they have many out there on the market). The rubber one bothered me, but the gel-filled one is comfortable and comforms well to my face. The Profile Lite has a boil-and-fit feature that allows you to fit it to your face and it is really comfortable. It is likely that your nosebleeds were caused by the dry air entering your nose. A heated humidifier would likely solve this problem. They probably didn't offer you one when you got your supplies because it has to be ordered separately and be medically justified for Kaiser to cover it. Complain to the DME (durable medical equipment) department at Kaiser and tell them you CANNOT use the machine without a heated humidifier. I had to get my doctor to order it specifically, and then I had to write a medical justification myself. I told them I have severe nasal allergies that are aggravated by dried-out nasal passages. I told them I had tried saline nose spray and saline gel (call Ayr) and neither helped. I told them I had tried a cold humidifier (called "passover") and a humidifier in my bedroom, neither of which helped. I told them that the dry air aggravated my allergies and my asthma (both true!) Let me tell you - the humidifier made all the difference in the world. I have lost over 100 pounds. I was retested at 60+ pounds lost, to see if I still needed the machine, and I did. I will ask for a retest in another 30 pounds or so. You will get used to the noise. As a matter of fact, I like the "white noise" effect of the machine - it cancels out other noise in the house. I can't sleep without the machine, now. Give it a chance. I don't want to nag you, but SLEEP APNEA CAN KILL YOU! If you need this machine, you just *have to* figure out a way to make it work for you. I personally know of two people who died from sleep apnea, one during his sleep and one in the hospital from complications/organ damage from prolonged and repeated episodes of oxygen deprivation. You can write me privately if you have any specific questions, at Grace44444 @ earthlink.net (soon to be Grace44444 @ frontiernet.net). Laurie W. Guest guest
- I know some people have to try out several different types of masks and it does take some getting used to. Call your sleep lab and tell them about the trouble you are having, maybe they can suggest something. Guest guest
Wow--I feel for you. I did my test on the same night as you did and finally gave up at 4:30 Saturday morning. When I took the machine back, I was as frustrated as you. There was a lady there who was doing the test again to see if her machine had to be reset and she said she'd had her machine for six years and can't live without it. She said the machine they give you for your personal use is much smaller and lighter and the apparatus not so cumbersome. I hope she is right. I didn't have nosebleeds like you did but it was a miserable night and after returning the machine, I went home to go to sleep!! I did have marks on my fast but they didn't last too long so maybe yours was too tight? At any rate, I told the technician I had no idea how on earth this was supposed to improve my life and she told me to just keep a positive attitude. I sure hope what I hear is right. Guest guest
Read my response to from two or three days ago (I think I wrote it on 10/8 or 10/9 but don't have access to the archives right now). I'm one of those people who love my CPAP machine. Truthfully, I don't love the machine but I love the results I get and the increased energy I feel when I use it. I feel *so much better* when I sleep with the machine on. When I'm forced to be without it, I can't sleep soundly and I keep waking up. If your sleep study determines that you need it, make the adjustments you need to use it. Be the squeaky wheel and get the equipment you need (a good-fitting mask, headgear, and a heated humidifier). As they say, the life you say may be your own. I told , and it's true - I know of two people who died of sleep apnea. One died in his sleep and one died from major organ damage caused by repeated episodes of oxygen deprivation. What a waste of these two people's lives, when they could have been saved by a simple piece of medical equipment. Don't get discouraged, and like the technician said, keep a positive attitude and it will be easier to adapt to. If you (or or anyone else) has any specific questions, don't hesitate to ask. Guest guest
Laurie, Thanks for the encouragement. I got a call today that I have to do the test all over because the oxygen saturation did not register at all. I'm really bummed about that because they don't have another appointment until 11/8 and that means I have to delay seeing Dr. Stiles even longer. I know it can improve the quality of my life incredibly, I'm just frustrated right now with lots of stuff and it all just came spilling out on the list. I feel really stupid and hope I didn't offend anyone.ChrisLaurie W wrote: Read my response to from two or three days ago (I think I wrote it on 10/8 or 10/9 but don't have access to the archives right now). We all share things here and that is an important part of the healing process for each of us. And let me tell you a little secret about the Kaiser Sleep Lab. ;-) Be the squeaky-wheel, the patient they can't wait to get rid of, the one who calls EVERY SINGLE DAY to see if there have been any cancellations so you can get in sooner. Let them learn to know you by the sound of your voice. They'll fit you in just to shut you up - LOLOL. You can do this, Laurie W Re: CPap machine nightmare Wow--I feel for you. I am sure the nosebleeds will stop but the burning isstill there and it is nearly 3 hours later, but it is fading. My face wasall puffy this morning and after an hour the marks on my face from thestraps and mask were finally gone.Has anyone had any of these things happen before? Do I have to take themachine that is prescribed or can I just continue to live with my sleepapnea? Guest guest
Good plan! I didn't think of that. I'm so dreading the whole process being repeated. I've heard people have such wonderful results. Maybe I'm just grumpy due to lack of sleep LOL! I just called the sleep lab and they said I should call in the mornings by 9:30. I'm putting a reminder on my outlook calendar to prompt me everyday at 9:00 to call. At least then I'll feel proactive. I had to wait so long for this darn test and then another month to repeat it just fries me!Laurie W wrote: Well my goodness, - don't feel stupid!!! Guest guest
Hey Laurie, Just wanted you to know how much your advice paid off. First I called yesterday and they were able to move me up to 10/21. So I called this morning and they were able to get me in tomorrow!!! I never thought I'd be saying I'm excited to be redoing this test, but I am excited that they were able to get me in so soon. Thanks so much for the encouragement. Guest guest
LOL! And I'm supposed to do some blood tests for my PCP after a 12 hour fast so returning the machine by 7:00 and going to the lab seems to be in order.Laurie W wrote: Wahooo! Guest guest
Hi You are certainly NOT stupid. I can't imagine that anything you've said would offend anyone. You have expressed your frustrations and concerns. Well . . . that is a good part of what this group is for. We all need a safe haven and this group is that for me - and I am sure that it is the same for many others, as well. Guest guest
Hey Kay, I know--I just felt kind of bad after venting my petty frustration. So many other people on this list have had to do appeals, deal with complications, serious illness, etc. Sometimes our stuff seems so important to us but in perspective it's really not that big a deal. But, I get the machine tonight, re-do the test and hopefully move on. Thanks for the words of encouragement. ChrisKay wrote: Hi You are certainly NOT stupid. Guest guest
Kay, So I re-did the test on Friday and the whole experience was much better than the first time. I did not get any messages from Kaiser over the weekend like last time, so here's hoping it all went well. Thanks to you and Laurie, and everyone else who was so supportive through this minor bump in the road ChrisKay wrote: Hi Wow! and Yay! That is so wonderful!
