Guest guest
My Whole Foods stocks almond butter all the time. Ingredient for the one I have here: organic dry roasted unblanched almonds. Hopefully this one is OK. They also sell a variety of other raw and roasted nut butters, no sugar added, organic and non-organic. Marilyn Feeling the pinch at the grocery store? Guest guest
I have been making my own pecan butter for the " brownies " since last summer. I bought a very powerful food processor (Cuisinart 14-cup), which can grind 1/2 pound of raw pecans or raw pecan pieces into about 1 cup pure pecan butter in a few minutes. I originally bought the food processor because my 22-year-old food processor couldn't break down dry curd cottage cheese for cheesecake very easily. The cheesecake is a staple of my diet. After buying the food processor, I found one brand of pure pecan butter in a store. It's Artisinal, I think. But the small jars cost significantly more than what I pay for the raw pecan pieces I now use to make the butter for baking. For me, it makes sense to make the pecan butter myself. I buy the raw pecans and pecan pieces at a bulk food specialty store, that is located within my limited driving range (because of chronic fatigue immune dysfunction) that charges only $6.99/pound ($15.41/kg). I recently discovered that the same store sells ground pecans (aka pecan meal or pecan flour) for only $5.99/pound (13.21/kg), so it's worthwhile for me to buy this product to use in breads such as Lois Lang bread. I have no financial ties to this company, other than the amount of money I dole out for the nuts :-) I write the prices as " only " because the bulk foods store where my husband usually shops charges about double those prices for pecans. I buy several kg of raw pecan pieces at a time, then weigh them and freeze them in 1/2 pound or 1-pound quantities. The day before baking, I transfer the frozen package of pecan pieces to my refrigerator, so that they will be easier to grind in the food processor. The first time I made " nut butter brownies " I used SCD-legal almond butter from a jar. However, I found that I preferred the taste of these when I used pecans instead. So I rarely use the almond butter now. I have started buying pecan halves at that store as well, to " roast " in my Crock-pot, for SCD legal snacks. Hope this helps. Guest guest
Yes you can. In Canada, you get either in the organic section of the grocery store or at a Health food store. You can also make your own by grinding them in a food processor till they're a buttery texture. The one drawback to the Whole Foods almond butter is that it's hard to find nut butter without the skins -- you'll see little dark flecks in their fresh-ground almond butter, which is fine for those with a good bit of healing under their belts, but not so good for newcomers to the diet. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund
Guest guest
I used to grind up pecans into butter for the brownies. However, when I tried the almond butter from Trader Joe's (you can get it raw or roasted), I found I tolerated it better. I think it may be because my processor doesn't get the pecans as creamy and smooth as store bought butters (it would never handle almonds). The one caveat is that the Trader Joe almond butter isn't blanched, which can cause some people problems. Last night I made the Yonana Muffins from EatSCD, and substituted almond butter for almond flour. Delicious! But it took two jars of almond butter, so they are some very pricey muffins!!!
