Guest guest
HI, It does appear that Dr. Stiles doesn't strictly adhere to the 10%. For instance, when I saw her I had only lost 17 pounds and she said I only had another 10 pounds to lose and that would not be 10% for me. I know that Beth Lemon was fast tracked and just had surgery about a month ago; she can tell you about that process. Good luck.wantaloose wrote: Hi everyone,I have been monitoring this support group for about a year. I have only posted once or twice just because I felt more comfortable that way. First, I want to say thank you for all the information you share and all the encouragement you give each other. This group has guided me from just being courious about wls to actualy going through the process. I had my first appt. with my primary doctor on March 3, 2004 @ Santa Kaiser. She was great and everyone I spoke to nutitionist, psych., sleep apnea people, were impressed on how much information I new regarding this proccess. I told them a lot of it was due to this group. I was approved on June 28, 2004 and have my Orientation Class @ SSF Kaiser in early Novemeber. Now I'm realizing more then ever that I can't sit back and just read anymore. I need to participate more to get the support I will need to get through this. I hope this makes sense. My question is does anyone from SSF Kaiser how the 10% weight loss works. I know it varies from place to place. I was told by a person who called me back from SSF kaiser that Dr. Stiles takes things into consideration as far as how much you have lost from your approval weight to your consultation weight. Also, that if she feel's your ready and you don't have any medical delay's (pending health issues)you can be "fast tracked" is what she called it and be moved up on your surgery date to maybe a month after your consultation. Has anyone heard of this? She also said that in December they were changing the % needed for weight loss prior to wls according to your BMI. Does anyone know anything about this? Thanks again for this great group!PS: I just noticed there is no spell check #$%@^ & !!

Guest guest
Hi , It's great to see you speaking up. It makes perfect sense to me that actively participating will increase your feeling of being connected here and hence increase how supported you feel. When I was having troubles with my e-mail and wasn't able to post, I began to disconnected and it really bothered me. I know how wonderfully supportive the folks here are, but they can't read my mind and, unless I post, there is no way for anyone to know how I'm feeling or what I'm thinking and so on. I hadn't heard that SSF was considering changing the required 10%. Any idea what they might be thinking of doing? I certainly hope that they aren't thinking of increasing it - that would just be cruel. Hope that you end up being fast-tracked. That would be great! Guest guest
HI , I was fast-tracked to surgery last month - what a whirlwind! I went to my first appt. with Dr. Stiles on 9/7/04, and based on my lifestyle changes, overall good health and schedule flexibility she decided to fast-track me. She immediately handed me off to Nadia, who then arranged for me to meet with the anesthesiologist, surgeon, obtain EKG, chest xrays and labwork all on that same day. She offered me a surgery date of 9/9/04, but I felt that I needed a few weeks to finalize my preparations. Luckily, there was an opening on 9/23/04, so I grabbed it. By the way, I was a few pounds shy of the 10% weight loss requirement but that wasn't a concern for her. Since 9/23/04 I've lost 25 pounds and am adjusting to my new life. I'm still trying to fit in all of my protein and water each day, not an easy thing but I keep at it. I also feel the need to go back to a more structured meal plan, similar to the 1200 cal plan (with much smaller portions, of course), as I'm currently just going for the most convenient protein in the fridge. I'd like to have more rounded meals, if possible. I'm sure as time passes I'll get better at this! I've only had one painful episode when I drank my protein shake too fast and was MISERABLE for hours. Thanks to all for sharing your experiences and advice. They are invaluable to us! Guest guest
Hi , glad you decided to post! Sorry I don’t have answers to your questions as I did not go through the SSF program, but I’m sure others here will be able to give you some answers. I just wanted to welcome you out of “lurkdom.” : - ) - Lesa - Seeking info on SSF kaiser Hi everyone, I have been monitoring this support group for about a year. Guest guest
Same for me, when I saw Dr. Stiles I had lost about 12 lbs and she told me to lose between 5-10 more. I don't remember the exact date I first saw her, but I got a call about 3 days after seeing her offering me a surgery date within the next week. I didn't turn out to have surgery because I had blood work that came back abnormal, but it was incredibly quick, my head was spinning. I had to wait 8 weeks to check my thyroid level on my new dose, but as soon as that came back normal I called bariatrics in SSF and they again offered me a date that was within a week. I didn't have to lose 10%, it was a little less, and she did count my weight from my initial referral, not just my orientation weight. I think it is individual for each person, considering what comorbids they have and how prepared they have made themselves for surgery.
