Guest guest
Holly, Good that you have the FitDay -- it's a big help in realizing you haven't eaten enough or that you've eaten too much. >> Pre-SCD, I relied heavily on nutrition drinks like Boost, Scandishakes, and Carnation Instant Breakfast, so it's been kind of hard to get in the habit of actually eating real food. << Well, if you like shakes and things, the current discussion about smoothies may be of interest. For instance, If you're OK with tomato juice, I have made a vegetable smoothie with a small can (6 ounces) of tomato juice, same amount of homemade broth, a couple of peeled hard boiled eggs or about 4-5 ounces of cooked boneless meat, a peeled steamed zucchini, and any other green leafies you care to toss in -- maybe a small handful. I also throw in some basil or oregano or something like than. Blend the daylights out of it and you have a meal in a very large mug which you can sip on while working on your email -- and you can put away a surprising amount of calories with a couple of these. If you can't handle the tomato juice, go with all broth. Maybe toss some yogurt into the mix. Depending on what you toss in, you can have 30-40 grams of protein and 300-400 calories. Granted, the shakes you mentioned were heavy-duty sugar, so initially, you may not find these to your taste. >> Last night I had roasted chicken for dinner, and munched on a lot of the skin (cooked in olive oil). I took 2 Prozymes with it, but before bed, I was still burping fatty chicken, so I took a 3rd one, which helped. Today's fat seemed to go over better, most of which came from whole milk yogurt (2 cups), half and half frozen yogurt (1/4 cup), and almond butter (beet brownie & yonana muffin). I also had a piece of cheese tonight. Tomorrow I'm going to cook up my first pineapple, so that will add a few carbs. I also discovered that I like deviled eggs (somehow I managed to avoid eating them for 34 years), so I'll cook some of those up too. << Well, as you discovered, you can't just start dumping fat in. If you've been out of the habit of healthy fats, it with take your digestion time to get used to producing enough enzymes to cope. So you need to introduce added fats gradually, not all at once. You're probably aware of this, but the gall bladder is where your body stores its various enzymes for fat and such. So when a fatty food comes along, it gives a SQUIRT and send the right amount of enzymes into the mix. Without a gall bladder, the system has to ramp up to fatty foods. To learn to produce the amounts of digestive juices commensurate with your fat consumption. I had a dreadful time with my colonoscopy prep because I was forbidden any fats for 3 days, and then my system was sending enzymes down the line -- and there was nothing for them to work on. So the body slowed down, and then had to ramp back up afterwards as I resumed my normal diet. >> I've always had a problem with my appetite. I won't be hungry all day, but right before bed, or in the middle of the night, I get hungry. By morning, my appetite is gone again. I've been this way ever since I got crohn's (about 15 years ago). However, my appetite is quite a bit better now than it was pre-scd. << I understand that lack of appetite can be a Crohn's issue. When I was recovering from my surgery (and my poor gut was highly insulted with all the STUFF they did to it, removing the uterus, ovaries, and Fallopian tubes, and going after the lymph nodes) I was rarely hungry during the day, either -- but come evening, I was very hungry -- and I often woke in the middle of the night, starving. What you may want to do is keep something like some nut-butter muffins by the bed, and if you wake up hungry, eat one. Or keep a smoothie in a thermos and have something warm and soothing to eat when you wake in the middle of the night. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund
