Guest guest
Hey Miranda, I think I read somewhere recently that one of the biggest reasons women get bladder infections can have to do with EColi in the stool and it accidentally gets into other areas, mostly from bathroom habits.... did anybody else hear that? I'll see if I can find it online.... a detox couldn't hurt I would think. total detox needed! eeek bladder infections...i HATE them So this is my third bladder infection in four months. I am on meds again. The doctor thinks I will become immune to them and thinks I should take a smaller dose but once a night as prevention (after I finish my current meds). I felt like such a basketcase when I had to go in today (yep, went to afterhours!). When he told me he found blood in my sample I started to well up with tears and had a mini breakdown. He was like why are you so upset over a bladder infection? I wanted to SCREAM...how could he possibly understand. I made some excuse about being stressed. I don't understand what could be causing this. 1- I'm abstinent, not by choice 2- I don't drink coffee anymore, so much for that (also not by choice) 3- I don't drink alcohol (not by choice either. HA)So I'm decided to do a total detox. I did go on very low sugar diet and that helped a lot. I guess I had slipped into my old ways a little, especially since in my new job I am baking a lot as part of the job. It's so friggin hard to resist the cookies that break....I hate throwing them out so I just eat them. Then I make excuses that it doesn't matter because I rode my bike to work. lol. OK, so NO MORE. I got an anti-candida diet book and I'm going to stick to it religiously and figure out what is causing this. I always get pain after I eat. And because I'm on meds again I KNOW the yeast will come back (as it does always) if I eat any sugar. So here I am...the girl who said "I don't believe in diets" so many times. I hate the idea of dieting and have always been a pretty healthy person overall. I cook everything from scratch, I don't eat anything pre-packaged or boxed AND I eat a lot of organic stuff. But oh well where has that got me? Anyway my parents are going out of town. My friends are all out of town. So now I have time to do this on my own without distractions. It's hard because when my parents cook for me I feel I can't refuse and don't want to make a whole other meal. But since theyre gone I'm going to go grocery shopping and eliminate everything for at least those nine days and probably more. All I can say is this better help becuase I feel like crap....I am supposed to go sailing in a race Sunday and almost had to say no to the woman who invited me to crew because of this damn infection. But hopefully I'm not totally immune to the med and I can still go...argh. Miranda
Guest guest
HI Miranda, Hon just in case you didn't know but a lack of estrogen can play a big part in constant bladder infections.... by any chance could that be in your case? Or could your urethra be somewhat blocked? with scarring perhaps? The Estrogen there can help too. I almost hate to add this being we were just talking about the Quinolones and Cipro but here it is, *grin* some info that suggests it for chronic UTI's "More than 75 percent of all recurrent bladder infections are caused by a single germ called E. Coli. (3) Women with recurrent E. Coli bladder infections usually suffer a genetic susceptibility in which the bacteria, which is found in everyone's intestines, have multiple little hairs called cilia that function like little feet that allow them to climb from the skin around the vagina, up the urinary tube, into the bladder (4). If you are a women who gets recurrent bladder infections, make sure that your doctor orders a urine culture when you have symptoms. If the culture grows the bacteria , E. Coli, more than once, you probably have E. Coli syndrome. Your doctor should order a laboratory test to see if that E. Coli can be cured by taking ampicillin. If you are not allergic to penicillin, he should give you a prescription for #100 500 mg ampicillin pills. Take one pill just before you have vaginal intercourse and one pill four times a day for three days when you have symptoms. If the E. Coli that grows from your urine (culture) is 'resistant' to ampicillin, your doctor usually prescribes a ''quinolone'' antibiotic, such as 400 mg of Tequin, and you take a half pill before vaginal intercourse and one pill a day for three days when you have symptoms." BUT....."I" would ask for an antibiotic that is NOT a quinolone based one if it were 'me' let alone to take it that often every time you have intercourse? Not me. ''If the urine culture does not grow any bacteria, the odds are that you have a mycoplasma or chlamydia infection that can be cured when you 'and' your partner take the one of the newer long-acting erythromycins, such as Biaxin or Zithromax. '' By the way I've idiopathic blood in my urine too (have for the past 10 yrs) and I've been scoped, doped, and roped with tests, LOL 3 X's extensively from checking out the kidneys, to the urethers, bladder and more...(just went thru it again last month) but it's quite common hon so don't be afraid of it, it's called hematuria, and often there is no cause.. The reason I am thoroughly checked out every so many years is because there is the slight possibility of bladder cancer if it's Chronic and can't be cleared up and I don't have any pain or UTI's just that it shows up microscopically in the urine constantly for those past 10 yrs. SO.... it's best to keep an eye on it so those red cell numbers don't go any higher. Keep peeing in a cup for the doc when you see them, and they test it right then with those strips and most of the time it's not a big deal and it really is fairly common. Hugs Dee .. Guest guest
Yes, its a fact that this can happen - which is why culturing and labs ruling out other infection is SO important. Two of my friends recently were diagnosed with vaginal e coli and some of the ladies on this list have mentioned it too. I believe, though, that e coli requires antibiotics. Guest guest
Hey everyone! Just to respond, yeah they said they were doing a culture...and they found immediately from the urine that there was blood and pus. The doctor said "that's normal" yeah...ok. well I guess if you call that normal. Anyway I think the way he said it just pissed me off because it seemed he was just shrugging it off. I don't like doctors who aren't personable (ie have no visible compassion). I think he just rubbed me the wrong way, hence I broke down...grr. He also said that since I have VV, the bacteria can get up there easier but I don't know how true that is...I never heard of that before! I don't know how it could be easier...but whatever! I think I might do the stool sample to see what the problem might be or if it could be E Coli. My mom also said when she was 16 (and she wasn't sexually active) she had chronic UTIs for almost a year. (oh great...only 8 months to go!) Anyway she had the exact same thing and then mysteriously it just went away...so I dunno! Just to let everyone know I haven't been drinking coffee or alcohol for MONTHS. I wipe front to back always, and shower regularly...and nothing goes down there that shouldn't, not even tampons anymore. As far as I'm concerned there is no reason I should be getting this amount of infection in me. I laughed when I read about the cilia that have legs that crawl up your vagina. Delightful! well I hope they all die. lol. Detox is going well. I have eaten eggs and onion/tomatos with fresh herbs this morning and salad with lemon dressing and tomatos/onions/beat leaves and carrots in the afternoon! You know what? I feel a lot less bloated (which is how I always feel after eating anything ) After I do it for ten days, I'm going to reintroduce things one at a time to see if any common things might be causing symptoms. And then at least that way I can assure that the yeast has died off inside everywhere including intestines if that is even possible. sigh...I hope it helps! Thanks for all your advice Miranda
Guest guest
Miranda - a nnumber of thoughts come to me after reading this and your prior post. 1.) Have you been given the same antibiotic all 4 times for the UTI? If so, is it possible that this antibiotic simply doesn't work for you? Have you googled "treatment for chronic UTI" to see if there are several meds named? Have you googled "causes for chronic UTI"? Perhaps something in such a query would ring bells with you. 2.) Blood and pus would be normal for a diagnosed infection - is that what the doc meant - that it is normal to find these things when infection is present? If not, maybe you should change docs. Maybe googling something like "normal urine findings" would give you a clearer understanding. 3.) Getting the fecal test for yeast infection confirmation is probably a good idea - but it isn't going to identify e coli, I don't think. E Coli is an infection we get FROM fecal matter in areas of our body where fecal matter shouldn't be found, ie vagina, urethra tummy, etc. If I had chronic UTI - I would want the lab to culture the urine and treat whatever the result of that culture was for my UTI problems and confirm in that culture whether e coli was present. One thing I keep pushing is being checked for hormonal deficiency and thyroid problems. As an older woman, in menopause I can tell y ou that estrogen has helped me with my urinary incontinence - and in so doing reduces the chance of urinary tract infections. It is commonly known that older, menopausal women get more UTI's, and the thing that they have in common is reduced hormonal output. You really might benefit from some testing along these lines. Even if the results are "normal" - as Dee has often told us - the vulva and vagina can be estrogen deficient. Perhaps you would benefit from topical estrace and or using something such as Vagifem insert . It may have an effect on your VV as well. Another thing you should rule out is allergy. You could begin taking allergy pills at night, before bed (they make most of us sleepy) - and do so for a month or so and see if you begin to notice any differences in your various conditions. A journal of pain level/foods/drinks/meds/activities is an excellent idea also for tracking down what might increase pain levels - and what therefore can be eliminated in the future. Just some thoughts - hope something helps, Dusty -----Original Message-----From: VulvarDisorders [mailto:VulvarDisorders ] On Behalf Of Miranda BeningerSent: Saturday, July 08, 2006 2:55 PMTo: VulvarDisorders Subject: Re: total detox needed! eeek bladder infections...i HATE them Hey everyone! Guest guest
HI Miranda, Hon just to say that having 'pus' in your urine definitely is NOT normal, that's an infection of some kind. But having microscopic blood can be more common (hematuria) but that's totally different than having pus. Dee~ ..
