Guest guest
If you guys ever get to the Twin Cities area in MN there is a place where you will agree has the best hot dogs ever! It's the Gopher Bar in St. and make sure you order a Coney Dog and fries. If you try to order it without certain ingredients or extra of others you'll be denied a dog~kind of like the " Soup Nazi " on Seinfeld! Also, their hours are whatever the owner feels like, but no one complains as the coney dogs are the best in the world! :-) Re: Lori, snack ideas > > > I went and bought some fruit today, and told her this was a " free " > food. Guest guest
You haven't had a hotdog until you've had a French-Canadian steamed hotdog with shredded coleslaw on top. The best ones are at a little hotdog and chip stand in Rigaud, Quebec, a small town just off the highway between Ottawa and Montreal, but from anywhere, there's nothing like a steamed hotdog with coleslaw on it : ) While you're there, have some *real* French fries, with plenty of salt and vinegar. I love a good hotdog, and I still have one occasionally. If I keep the rest of my sodium intake lower that day, it's not a problem. Not much I can do about those fries though : ( My second favourite kind of hotdogs are the ones slow-cooked on rollers. A local 7 Eleven store has those, and they're great, as long as you get one before the weiners have been on the rollers for 5 hours : ) We have a triple-A baseball team and a pro football team here, but unfortunately, there isn't much to enjoy about a concession hotdog at either of those ballparks. Pierre P.S. I do sometimes have a small fry and a Coke from a local chipwagon on my way to dialysis during the summer. As I've said before, after a while, you get to know what will and what won't affect your limits - not that I would encourage anyone to experiment with potassium. I do this when I know they will be taking blood work that day. Some people on dialysis can actually allow themselves more dietary freedom at times than some people who are pre-dialysis, simply because we know that dialysis will clean things up. Hey, I take my positives where I can get them :-) Re: Lori, snack ideas > > > I went and bought some fruit today, and told her this was a " free " > food. Guest guest
I would add, if any of you ever vacation in Maine, there is a little hot dog stand on route 1 between Wells and York in extreme Southern Maine called Flo's Hot Dogs. Just ask for Flo Dogs- they're the best! -beth PS: Funny how we're all hot dog conoisseurs when we're supposed to be on a low salt diet! (Actually, I'm not- did it for about a year, though. But I had high BP even with a low salt diet- no change whatsoever whether I had salt or not- only BP med keeps it down)
Guest guest
Ahh, but can you then walk a few doors down and buy a freshly baked sugar pie? : ) Yes, it is funny we are talking about hotdogs on a group when probably a majority have to restrict their sodium intake. But you know, it's sodium restriction, not sodium elimination. There are many people who seem like they would feel right at home in a medieval monastery (not so much on this group, but on others I've encountered). I've restricted stuff, but I've never eliminated anything - and let me tell you, I have lab values every month that could not be better. Having kidney failure is bad enough that you don't want to totally eliminate all of life's little pleasures, like the occasional hotdog, coffee, French fry, wine, beer, or whatever. The idea is what I call " sensible cheating " . There's no renal diet I know of that says zero sodium and zero potassium. They all say 1500 to 2500 milligrams per day. So, there's actually quite a bit of wiggle room for picking and choosing one's foods for the day. Any renal dietician worth her or his " salt " would never tell a patient NEVER to have anything. It would be pretty depressing. But they would say, if you cheat occasionally, just be careful how you do it. Eat a slice or two of pizza, but don't eat a whole medium pizza by yourself... that kind of thing. And don't do it every day. If, as a patient, you know that once in a while, you can have a bit of pizza, or a hotdog, if that's what you like, it makes it a lot easier and more pleasant to stick to the diet the rest of the time. So overall, you're probably sticking to the diet better that way. Guest guest
Well, to throw in two cents from the NY area, Coney Island is the only place to get a Coney Dog. But here in NJ, we have a place down the shore called The Windmill. It is built like a none working windmill. Their hot dogs are among the best ever. Rita - do you remember The Windmill? They are a NJ institution, just like Rita's Italian Ices. danajoy@... wrote: If you guys ever get to the Twin Cities area in MN there is a place where you will agree has the best hot dogs ever! Guest guest
I prefer waiting until Red's Eats in Wiscasset, and I skip the hotdog for the Lobster Salad Roll! Guest guest
Lobster rolls were a big deal when I lived in the Maritimes. I'm told they are very good, but, I'm not much one to eat creepy crawlers from the sea Pierre Re: hot dogs > > > I would add, if any of you ever vacation in Maine, there is a little hot dog > stand on route 1 between Wells and York in extreme Southern Maine called > Flo's Hot Dogs. > Just ask for Flo Dogs- they're the best! > > -beth > > > PS: Funny how we're all hot dog conoisseurs when we're supposed to be on a > low salt diet! > (Actually, I'm not- did it for about a year, though. Guest guest
I'm with you on this one, Walt. We haven't been in Boothbay a year yet, but I have passed Red's Eats so many times going through Wiscasset to anywhere civilized. The lines during the summer season are incredible and I haven't been tempted to stand there very long. Next summer, though I intend to try it. Nice to hear from you. Guest guest
No, not all year- but they do open a little in February, for 3-4 hours a day during the week. We didn't get there this year either, although we only live about 50 miles away! -beth
Guest guest
I'll throw my two cents in with yours, . A Coney Dog in MN????
